Extremely strong in the lead, but the bouldering prevents precious metal

Filip Schenk traveled to Munich with the aim of cutting a good figure in the lead. After the competition ended, it can be said that the sport climber from St. Christina far exceeded his expectations. He reached the final in bouldering and also in lead. And on Thursday he took a strong fourth place in the Olympic combined competition. Only a failed bouldering round prevented me from winning a medal.

The first of the four tops, which almost all athletes mastered, represented an insurmountable hurdle for Schenk. He at least climbed - as he did with the second boulder - to a zone ranking. On the third wall, Schenk showed his class when he reached the top on his second attempt. Suddenly precious metal was within reach, especially since the Val Gardena lead is among the absolute world class. But because he couldn't manage a zone in the last boulder, his chances of winning a medal were gone. Strong lead performance Now it was time to say goodbye to the European Championship in the best possible way. And that's what Schenk did: in the lead he climbed almost to the top. Schenk only fell into the rope two holds below the top. Although he knew it wouldn't be enough to win a medal, he clenched his fist and said goodbye to the spectators on Königsplatz with a broad smile.

Meanwhile, the fight for gold was Jakob Schubert against Adam Ondra. After bouldering, the long-term rivals were only separated by two tenths of a point. So the lead had to decide the outcome. First, the Austrian climbed just below the top, earning 95,1 points and waiting for Ondra as the leader. He confidently climbed through the wall, but then slipped on the crucial hold. Exactly the move that also proved to be Schenk's downfall. Schubert won gold, Ondra silver, while Alberto Gines Lopez from Spain took bronze.
