Italy Cup: Victory for Andrea Ebner and new South Tyrolean speed record

Andrea Ebner from AVS Brixen made people sit up and take notice with her victory at the first Italian Cup Lead in Milan. She is probably the most versatile athlete in Italy at the moment. Her main discipline is bouldering, where she climbed onto the podium in two of the two Italian Cups this year and also qualified for the upcoming World Cup competitions. In the first lead competition of the season, she achieved the masterpiece: She climbed away from her competitors and favorites in the final and left Silvia Cassol from Belluno and Claudia Ghisolfi from Turin behind her. The day before, Andrea had also climbed in the Speed Italy Cup, because she is a title contender in the overall ranking of all disciplines. She finished tenth overall, just two hundredths of a second shy of her personal best.

Also worth mentioning is Jana Messner's (AVS Brixen) good finish in the final and eighth place. In the youth ranking she came third behind Sara Morandini and Camilla Moroni. The young Elisabeth Lardschneider from Val Gardena came in a good eleventh place. Mara Plaikner was 22nd.

In the men's category, Stefano Ghisolfi from Turin won confidently ahead of the young climbing talent Giorgio Bendazzoli from Schio and Francesco Vettorata from Belluno. David Oberprantacher (AVS Meran) from Passeir almost achieved a sensation. Finishing tenth in the semifinals, he was able to climb up to fourth place and narrowly missed the podium. He reached the same climbing height as the third-place finisher, but was a hundredth of a second slower. With Filip Schenk (AVS Val Gardena) in fifth place and David Piccolruaz (AVS Merano) in ninth place, two state squad athletes were still in the final. Filip Schenk won the youth classification ahead of David Piccolruaz and Nicolò Balducci from Verona. The following qualified for the semi-finals were: Juri Unterkofler (AVS Brixen) 13th; Lorenzo Sinibaldi (AVS Val Gardena) 15. Felix Kiem (AVS Merano) 18.; Janluca Kostner (AVS Val Gardena) 21st. The young Jonathan Kiem (AVS Meran) was 32nd.

We are now looking forward to the home stage of the 2nd Italian Cup Lead on June 17, 2017 in the climbing center in Bruneck.
