Italian speed climbing champion wanted

When it comes to speed climbing, the focus is on speed. The participants have to climb a standardized route as quickly and precisely as possible. On Saturday, September 24th, Italy's elite will compete against each other on the walls of the Salewa Cube.

Leonardo Gontero will also be at the start. The 22-year-old from Piedmont is the reigning Italian champion. He is eager to successfully defend his title on Saturday. It would be Gontero's fifth “Scudetto” in a row. Before the competition, however, the reigning champion had a lot to look forward to. “It is not said that the fastest wins, it is always the most precise who wins. For me, Ludovico Fossali almost has the title in his pocket, but my team-mate Alessandro Santoni and the young Gianluca Zodda are also possible gold candidates,” believes Gontero. As of Wednesday, 37 speed climbers have registered for the national championships, including Nora Rainer, Michael Piccolruaz (both AVS Meran) and Andrea Ebner (AVS Brixen).

As part of the press conference, Ulla Walder, representative of the Italian sport climbing association for the Trentino-South Tyrol region, gave insight into the development of the local sport climbing scene. Sport climbing is currently booming in South Tyrol. “Due to Dolomite climbing, it has a long tradition and finds fertile ground. The first rapprochement takes place thanks to the Alpine Club's active course activities and school sports. In the indoor area you will find the most beautiful climbing halls in Italy in South Tyrol. The good distribution of up to 40 climbing facilities is ideal for young sport climbers and outdoor climbing is possible in the Alpine Club's over 80 climbing gardens and bouldering areas," explained Walder.

The media event was also attended by host Ruth Oberrauch and Martin Knapp, managing director of the Salewa Cube.
