Already one of the biggest sporting events in South Tyrol

In just under a month, the best sport climbers in the world will be setting up camp again in Brixen. The second edition of the Boulder World Cup is drawing crowds to the cathedral city - also because the sport is experiencing a real boom.

By chance, Brixen slipped into the international climbing association's World Cup calendar a little over a year ago when the AVS Südtirol quickly took over the stage in Moscow that had been canceled due to the war in Ukraine. The premiere was then mastered with flying colors – and perfectly organized within just three months. That's why Brixen was awarded the Boulder World Cup again this year. This will take place from June 9th to 11th. Preparations are already in full swing. The organizers are working in the background to be included in the calendar in the long term.

“It is an event for the entire South Tyrolean climbing scene – but not only. The people who were there last year were excited about how exciting the competitions are. The euphoria in Brixen is huge. We expect that the competitions will be sold out again this year,” explained OK boss Ralf Preindl at the presentation of the event on Tuesday in Bozen Süd. If you want to secure a ticket, you should buy it online. By then it could already be too late on site. The vertical will once again be transformed into a climbing stadium for around 3.000 enthusiastic fans and will provide a more than worthy setting.

A sport on the rise

The spectators don't just get their money's worth because of the climbing spectacle and the good atmosphere. There is also a lot on offer in terms of the supporting program. Be it, for example, in culinary terms or the World Cup parties in the evening. The organizers have also joined the GreenEvent program and therefore attach great importance to sustainability.

The fact is: The Boulder World Cup in Brixen is already one of the largest sporting events in South Tyrol. Apart from the traditional winter sports world cups or the home games of FC Südtirol, HC Bozen or HC Pustertal, no event in this country - when added together - enjoys such a high number of spectators. In addition, the audience in Brixen will be presented with the best level of this sport. By the way, the big Hubert von Goisern concert takes place in the vertical a week before.

180 climbers took part in Brixen last year. This year, over 200 athletes are expected to take part - also because it is a qualifying year for the Olympics. The two South Tyroleans Filip Schenk and Michael Piccolruaz also want to qualify for the 2024 Games in Paris. They will also be there in Brixen. “We are particularly pleased that two local heroes are taking part this year,” explained Alexandra Ladurner from the OK team.
“Climbing is booming worldwide, including in Italy. New halls are being built everywhere.” AVS President Georg Simeoni

AVS President Georg Simeoni also added: “Climbing is booming worldwide, including in Italy. New halls are being built everywhere. Especially since the sport became Olympic. We are particularly pleased about this as an Alpine club. For example, people also learn the basics of safety. The education of youth is very important. But the older generation also keeps fit in the climbing halls over the winter.” The World Cup in Brixen contributes significantly to this boom.
