Tomilov and Shin are the new ice climbing world champions

The two best ice climbers in the world at the moment, the Russian Maxim Tomilov and the Korean HeeYong Park, fought an exciting duel at the ice tower in Rabenstein and reached the top, the end of the route, to the delight of more than 1000 enthusiastic spectators. Tomilov was a full ten seconds faster in his attempt with a time of 9.12 minutes and was therefore able to celebrate the first world championship title of his career. And because brother and defending champion Alexey came third, the Tomilovs' family happiness was perfect.

“I am overjoyed that I was able to win the world title. “It’s just unbelievable, especially because I was only ten seconds faster than Park,” said neo-world champion Maxim Tomilov.

Three athletes also reached the top among women. The fastest was Woon Seon Shin, who replaced Angelika Rainer as world champion. “In the last World Cup in Saas Fee I didn’t reach the final. I was very annoyed about that. But I'm even more happy now that I'm world champion. “I can’t believe it,” Shin said.

After three gold medals, Angelika Rainer won the silver medal this time. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old from Merano was satisfied. “Climbing in front of your own audience is nice, but it also put immense pressure on me. I climbed to the top. I can't blame myself for that. “Shin was just a little faster today,” said Rainer.

The Swiss Petra Klingler took third place. The soon-to-be 23-year-old from Bonstetten near Zurich was the slowest of the three ice climbers who reached the end of the final route. “I am totally satisfied. I have reached the end of the route. From that point of view, I did everything right,” said Klingler.

Barbara Zwerger was a second South Tyrolean in the final alongside Angelika Rainer. The 42-year-old from Bolzano achieved a respectable seventh place. “Making it to the final was a success for me. I gave it my all again in the final. Maybe it would have gone up a little further if I had understood how to take a hold a little earlier. But it fits well like that,” said Zwerger.

Kartashev and Krasavina win speed competition

The World Cup speed climbing final took place on Saturday evening. This is where the Russian team showed its strengths, as all podium finishes went to athletes from the largest country in the world in terms of area.

In the men's category, Vladimir Kartashev came out on top, conquering the 15-meter-high ice wall in an incredible 9,61 seconds. Kartashev was 0,02 seconds faster than Nikolay Primerov. And Egor Trapeznikov, a third Russian, also stayed under the ten-second mark (9,99).

Maria Krasavina won the women's event. She had a winning time of 12,09 seconds. The Russian relegated her compatriots Ekaterina Feoktistova (13,21) and Ekaterina Koshcheeva (14,01).
