120 participants at the Euregio-SprintChampion final in Meran

In keeping with the SprintChampion concept, a very special location was chosen for the grand Euregio finale. On Sunday, October 3rd, the sprint track stretched 60 meters from the Kurhaus in Merano along the well-known spa promenade. “Bringing sport into city centers is an important signal, because sport is part of our everyday culture and must be made visible,” explains State Governor Arno Kompatscher. The Tyrolean State Governor Josef Geisler also agreed with this opinion and explained: “The Euregio-SprintChampion final is so special because it is held in the heart of Merano and the sport is brought closer to the spectators.” A total of 120 sprinters from South Tyrol, Tyrol and Trentino came together at the grand finale to determine the Euregio Sprint Champions. The South Tyrolean candidates for the title of Euregio Sprint Champion were determined in advance at the various stages and finally at the state finals. The VSS partner associations, ASVÖ Tirol and CSI Trento, took over the search for young sprinters from Tyrol and Trentino. “Through the Euregio-SprintChampion final, Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino come together to enjoy sport, exchange ideas and make new friends,” explained sports assessor for the province of Trento Roberto Failoni. 3 gold medals for South Tyrol After preliminary and intermediate heats, the fastest five girls and boys in each age group qualified for the big finals. There the South Tyrolean sprinters showed off once again: They were able to win three out of a possible eight gold medals and EUREGIO titles. The Tyrolean athletes were able to secure first place five times. Unfortunately, the Trentino athletes were not able to make it to the highest podium, but they were able to secure many of the following placements. The medals and diplomas were presented to the winners by, among others, the chairman of the Raiffeisen Association Herbert Von Leon, the director of the Office for Sport Armin Hölzl and the director of the Office of the European Region Christoph von Ach. Lea Perathoner sprinted to the precious metals for South Tyrol in the U14 girls category, where the woman from Völs stayed under the 60-second mark (8 seconds) over 7,98 meters. In the boys' category, Manuel Antonucchi from Lana secured the gold medal for South Tyrol with the fastest final run of 7,69 seconds. In the U12 category, Mattia Rigon from Freienfeld made it to the top podium in 8,56 seconds. “The Euregio final of the Sprint Champion once again impressively demonstrates the unifying and integrative effect of sport. Children and young people from different regions and language groups came together at this final for a sporting exchange,” explains VSS chairman Günther Andergassen.
