19th Italian championship title for Silvia Weissteiner - silver for Rifesser

Silvia Weissteiner is a truly exceptional athlete. Today in Turin she secured her sixth 5000m title, after 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2012. It is her 19th title in total, as she has also won seven gold medals in the 3000m indoors and another six in cross country. The 36-year-old from Gasteig, who competes for the forest guard, celebrated a start-finish victory today. Weissteiner dictated the pace from the start, after three kilometers she definitely broke away from her opponents and won in 16:03.55 minutes, eight seconds ahead of Valentina Costanza and 12 seconds over Silvia La Barbera.

Silver for Lukas Rifesser and Leonardo Dei Tos

Lukas Rifesser, who is now back after his many injuries, took silver in the 800 m. The 29-year-old from Bruneck only had to admit defeat to top favorite Giordano Benedetti. The man from Trento won in 1:47.38 minutes, Rifesser came second in 1:48.20. The walker Leonardo Dei Tos won the second silver medal over 10 km. The 23-year-old from Vittorio Veneto, who competes for the Bolzano club Athletic Club 96, took second place behind Federico Tontodonati. Dei Tos became the Italian indoor champion over 5 km in Padua in February. On Sunday, 36-year-old Merano discus thrower Hannes Kirchler is aiming for his 10th Italian championship title in Turin. This year he holds the Italian season record of 62.56 m. His strongest opponents are Giovanni Faloci (62.50 m) and Federico Apolloni (61.78 m).
