2022 ends with a running spectacle: BOclassic presented

The 48th edition of the New Year's Eve Run was presented on Thursday at a press conference in the municipal hall of the city of Bolzano. The mayor of Bolzano Renzo Caramaschi, his deputy Luis Walcher and the city councilor for sports Juri Andriollo were present as guests of honor, which shows the strong connection between the citizens of Bolzano and the event. During the press conference, the first names of the athletics stars who will be competing on December 31st, as well as the BOclassic South Tyrol program were presented. Numerous running aces have already tackled the route through Bolzano's old town at least once, be it in the women's 5-kilometer elite race or the men's 10-kilometer elite race. Since the first edition in December 1975, nine Olympic champions, 32 world champions and 29 European champions have taken part in the event. The BOclassic South Tyrol often brought out a new star in the athletics sky. So it's no wonder that the BOcassic Südtirol carries the World Athletics Road Race label 2022 and can invite top runners. “Today we can reveal the first names that will take part in the BOclassic South Tyrol. This year too, the elite races will be high-class. At the top of the men’s field is Yemaneberhan Crippa,” explained sporting director Gianni Demadonna. A trio of top athletes On December 31st, Yemaneberhan “Yeman” Crippa will compete in his seventh BOclassic. After winning gold in the 10.000 meters and bronze in the 5.000 meters at the European Championships in Munich this summer, the crowd favorite will return to the Talferstadt once again. The Trentino native, who holds the national record of 27.10 minutes in the 10.000 meters, has never climbed onto the podium at Walterplatz. His best result so far was fourth place in 2017, when Muktar Edris emerged as the winner. Demadonna also revealed the names of the top athletes: "The winners of the last two editions, Margaret Kipkemboi and Dawit Seyaum, will both be here again." The Kenyan Margaret Kipkemboi has already won the Bolzano New Year's Eve run twice - in 2019 and 2020. The 29-year-old also won gold in the 2019 meters at the World Championships in Doha in 5.000, and this year she won bronze in the 10.000 meters in Eugene (USA), also setting a new personal record (30.10 minutes). Last year's winner Dawit Seyaum will also be among her competitors. The defending champion set a new course record (15.22 minutes) a year ago. The 26-year-old Ethiopian also won bronze in the 5.000 meters at the World Championships in Eugene this year. Circuit through Bolzano city center As usual, the athletes will complete a circuit in the center of Bolzano, the finish line of which has been moved from Waltherplatz by 24 meters towards the train station. Some top runners from South Tyrol, Markus Ploner, Hannes Perkmann and Raphael Joppi, are also taking part in the men's elite race. Athletics lovers can follow them and the other athletes on site or, thanks to the almost traditional Rai broadcast, on television. “The event will be broadcast live on television or via streaming. The race will return to its usual form, meaning that the route and the stands will be filled with spectators,” commented the President of the Bozen Raiffeisen Runners Club, Andreas Widmann, who also thanked the institutions, sponsors and clubs for the successful event cooperation was thanked. The organizers of the Bozen Raiffeisen Runners Club also presented the event's amateur races. Before the start of the elite races, hundreds of runners from the hobby sector will take part in the Just-For-Fun race, the Ladurner Volkslauf or the Raiffeisen Youth Cup. It starts with the Just-For-Fun runners, whose starting shot goes off at 13 p.m. on Walterplatz. An hour later it is the turn of the participants in the BOclassic Ladurner fun run, which also forms the first stage of the Top7 running series 2023. Shortly before 15 p.m., at 14.55:15.35 p.m., the children and young people of the Raiffeisen Youth Cup can take part.
