Agnes Tschurtschenthaler 36th at the European Cross Country Championships in Hyeres

After her victory last year at the U23 European Championships, Sifan Hassan also prevailed in the general class today. It was her third medal at major events this year after gold at the European Indoor Championships in Prague and bronze at the World Championships in Beijing over 1500 m. Hassan increased the pace after 2.5 km and distanced herself from a chasing group with the British Kate Avery and Steph by ten seconds Twell, the Norwegian Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal, the Romanian Anuta Bobocel and the Irish Fionnuala McCormack, who was twice European champion under her maiden name Britton in 2011 and 2012. Hassan found it increasingly difficult to maintain the pace towards the end of the 8.087 meter long race. But she saved her lead of eight seconds across the finish line. As in the previous year, silver went to Kate Avery, bronze went to Grøvdal.

The runner from SV Vipiteno started cautiously (47th after km 1, 46th after km 2,5) but then gained eleven places with a strong finish and finally came in 36th. For the 33-year-old South Tyrolean, it is the best placement in her fourth European Championship participation in the general class. In 2004 in Heringsdorf, Germany, she came 51st, in 2007 in Toro, Spain, she came 38th and five years ago in Albufeira in Portugal, she came 42nd. In 2001 in Thun, Switzerland, she celebrated her European Championship debut with 25th place in the junior women's (U20) category. The European Cross Country Championships will take place in Italy on December 11, 2016. The title fights will take place in Chia in Sardinia.
