Alex Schwazer: “I will fight”

Before Schwazer will start over 50 kilometers at the World Team Championships in Rome on Sunday morning, he spoke on his Facebook page on Saturday. “Tomorrow (Sunday, editor's note) is a very important day for me. It's now been four years since I last ran over 50 kilometers. I don't know how many of these races I've done in the past, but certainly not more than 20. The 50 kilometers are therefore difficult to estimate, you can't train them exactly. What will be important is how I will feel at the end of the race. Maybe I will be able to increase the pace after kilometer 40, or maybe I will have to suffer for it. In the past it often happened that I even had to withdraw. But I'm not afraid of the track, but I have the greatest respect for it. “It will also be important to achieve a good time for the team ranking,” says the walker from Kalch, looking forward to his eagerly awaited comeback. At the same time, Schwazer also comments on the most difficult chapter in his life to date. “The association, the team and my colleagues welcomed me back very well. In the last three years I missed walking, but at the same time I realized that as an athlete I lived in a microcosm. I didn't realize that I was privileged in contrast to all those people who had and still have to fight their own battles in everyday life. When you do sport, the effort, the effort, is a privilege. Last year I repeatedly achieved milestones with Donati (coach Alessandro Donati, editor's note). I would like to thank him for that, as well as my manager Giulia Mancini and my lawyer Gerhard Brandstätter.” He was always openly welcomed and supported during his stays and training sessions in Rome. “The people motivated me in my daily training. The bus driver, the pensioner, the students on the way home - week after week they gave me a lot of energy. I also received a lot of messages that always encouraged me in my plans to return. I thank you for that,” Schwazer concludes his Facebook post.

Dei Tos beaten over 20 kilometers Before Alex Schwazer returns over 50 kilometers on Sunday, the 20-kilometer competition took place on Saturday. The Chinese dominated, celebrating a double victory with Zhen Wang and Zelin Cai. Leonardo Dei Tos, who is from Veneto but starts for Athletic Club Bozen, was 67th.
