Alex Schwazer finds new hope

At the beginning of May, Alex Schwazer suffered a bitter setback when he failed in his application to have his eight-year ban lifted before the Swiss Federal Court. Now the Wipptaler has new hope again: On Monday, RIS chief investigator Giampietro Lago presented new evidence in the regional court in Bolzano that could exonerate the walker.

The topic is still Schwazer's ominous urine sample, which he gave on January 1, 2016. An increased level of synthetic testosterone was found in this sample - Schwazer was de facto doped. However, the walker from Kalch always denied his guilt and repeatedly reiterated that he was the victim of a conspiracy. In September 2019, RIS chief investigator Giampietro Lago explained at the Bolzano regional court that Schwazer's DNA density in the doping sample had an abnormally high value. For the first time there was actually a suspicion of manipulation. DNA anomaly and suspicious emails Lago also presented new findings on Monday. In the last few weeks, among other things, the urine of 37 FIDAL athletes whose profile (age, state of health, sporting activity) is very similar to Schwazer at the time of the doping sample was tested. The result: None of the test subjects had the same DNA density as the walker from Kalch - on the contrary: the differences are enormous. Overtraining can therefore be ruled out for the abnormal DNA values.

So there are only 3 possibilities left for the abnormal DNA density. One of them would be that Schwazer became ill on the day of the urine collection, but this is unlikely, after all, according to his own statements, the walker trained intensively at the time and was always fit. So there are only two things left: Was the sample manipulated or did Schwazer actually dope?

This question could not be clarified on Monday either. But the suspicion that the sample was subsequently tampered with is growing ever stronger. In addition to the abnormally high DNA density, e-mails from high-ranking officials of the International Athletics Federation have recently appeared in which there is talk of a plot against Schwazer. However, these are still on a server in Germany and cannot currently be checked for authenticity. Now it's the prosecutor's turn The fact is that the evidence preservation process has been completed. Now it is up to the public prosecutor whether he uses the evidence to bring charges against Alex Schwazer or whether he drops the case against the walker from Kalch - the latter would mean that the Olympic champion is innocent. The decision will be made in the next few weeks. If Schwazer is effectively acquitted, then he can also hope that the 8-year ban will be lifted. However, this process would not take place in South Tyrol, but rather before the International Court of Arbitration for Sports in Lausanne (Switzerland).
