Everything new at the 17th South Tyrol Marathon

The biggest change concerns the route: After 15 editions in Neumarkt and two in Bolzano, South Tyrol's only marathon will take place for the first time this year on the route from Merano to Bolzano.

The athletes will therefore run 42 kilometers along the Etsch. In the villages of Marling, Tscherms, Lana, Burgstall, Gargazon, Vilpian, Terlan and Siebeneich, music bands heat up the runners and create a festival atmosphere. In Lana, Radio Sonnenschein provides live music, in Bolzano, the exhibition hall of the car partner Opel, which has been converted into a disco, and the counter hall of the main sponsor Südtiroler Sparkasse on Waltherplatz are crossed. The finish line in exhibition hall A is also a novelty for South Tyrol and Italy. The runners can expect rock music and a fog light, which will ensure a unique experience for all participants. Four African drum musicians will set the mood at the fair.

Marathon, half marathon and 10 kilometer run

“I wish Alfred Monsorno and his team nice weather. Knowing Alfred, the run is otherwise perfectly organized,” said the President of the South Tyrolean Athletics Association, Armin Bonamico, who praised the organizing committee boss.

However, not only will the 42,195 kilometers be run, but the Four Point by Sheraton half marathon will start in Terlan at 11.15 a.m. Other competitions include the 10-kilometer athlete's run starting at Bolzano's Waltherplatz and the Mini-Kids Marathon over 1.000 meters. “Like every year, some top athletes will be at the start again this year. “We want to appeal above all to hobby and running tourists with this event, and I am thrilled at how well the run is being received, especially by local athletes,” emphasized OC boss Alfred Monsorno. By Monday, 1100 athletes from 21 different countries had registered, 450 of whom are South Tyrolean.

Kenyan marathon favorites

The top favorites for the marathon are the Kenyans Philemon Kipkering Metto (winner in 2006 in 2:16:28 hours) and Ruto Silas, who also has a best time of 2:16 hours. The strongest regional runner in the starting field is Riccardo Baggia from Cles. In the women's race, Federica Ballarini from Arco is the contender for Nuzmmer 1. This year she has already won the Piacenza marathon in March and the Marcialonga Running in September. The men's half marathon is also strong with Said Boudalia (winner in Neumarkt 2009), Hermann Achmüller, Michael Burger and Johannes Hillebrand. Gertraud Höllrigl, Ulrike Raich and Petra Pircher start in the women's competition. In the 10 km run, however, Peter Lanziner and Rudi Brunner will probably fight for victory.

Four runners will start the race with the golden starting number 17: Paolo Mingardi from Turin, Willi Joppi from Salur, Paul Pernter from Montana and Josef Rastner from Enneberg. These four runners have taken part in all editions of the South Tyrol Marathon so far.

300 volunteers help Monsorno is particularly proud of the 300 volunteers, “without whom this race could never take place. My thanks also go to the volunteer fire brigades, carabinieri, road police and the White Cross.” At the South Tyrol Marathon there is a refreshment point every five kilometers. “On Sunday we need 12.000 bottles of water, 8000 apples, 1000 bananas, 15 kg of Loacker biscuits, 2000 packs of Profanter Krockys and 500 liters of Multipower drinks.” Really impressive numbers.

With his event he also wants to think about the socially disadvantaged and will therefore donate one euro per participant in the marathon and half marathon to the aid project “South Tyrolean Doctors for the Third World” as well as one euro per participant in the 10 km run and the Mini Kids Marathon donate to the South Tyrolean children's cancer charity “Peter Pan”.

The 17th South Tyrol Marathon, which is also part of the Top7 racing series, will be broadcast on RAI Sport in a half-hour summary with commentary by Franco Bragagna.

Everything new at the 17th South Tyrol Marathon

Next Sunday, October 3rd, the starting signal for the 9th International South Tyrol Marathon will take place at 17 a.m. at the Thermenplatz in Meran. The event, which will feature all sorts of new things this year, was presented on Tuesday at a press conference in Bolzano.
