As a night race in May: BOclassic breaks new ground

Normally, at the BOclassic Südtirol, the running athletes “own” the Bolzano city center on New Year’s Eve afternoon. Due to Corona, there were no large gatherings of people on December 31, 2020 and so only the elite races were held at the turn of the year. But not in the city center as usual: four and a half months ago, some of the best middle-distance runners in the world fought a thrilling battle in the Safety Park traffic safety center. However, the hobby run, the so-called BOclassic Ladurner Volkslauf, and the junior races of the BOclassic Raiffeisen Youth Cup have been postponed. They will now take place on Saturday, May 22nd. From 19 p.m., the various age groups currently permitted (U16, U18 and general age group) tackle the well-known, 1,25 kilometer long route in Bolzano city center, which starts from Waltherplatz and runs through Silbergasse, over the fruit square and through the arcades, past Rathausplatz, into Weintraubengasse, Laurinstraße and Bahnhofsallee back to the starting point. The young athletes in the U16 and U18 categories will complete two laps on Whit Saturday, while the general age group has to complete four loops. Great security precautions “The BOclassic Südtirol Nightrun takes place under great security precautions. All participants must undergo a Covid-19 test before the race and are only allowed to compete if the result is negative. Wearing a mask is also mandatory for the first 500 meters. We also discussed this with our colleagues from the Half Marathon Meran-Algund, who recently ran their event smoothly,” explains Andreas Widmann, President of the organizing Bozen Raiffeisen Runners Club. Of the total of 300 free starting places, around 75 percent have been taken a week and a half before the showdown. The BOclassic Südtirol Nightrun is the second stage of the Top7 running series. After the start in Meran, the day's winners there Michael Hofer (ASV Deutschnofen) and Arianna Lutteri (ASD Team KM Sport) are in the lead in the overall ranking. The organizers of the Bozen Raiffeisen Runners Club hope that the separation between elite and amateur runners required on New Year's Eve 2020 will remain an exception. “We are confident that we will be able to hold our BOclassic South Tyrol again under “normal” circumstances at the turn of the year 2021. Now the full focus is on the night run, which we want to carry out safely and without any problems,” concluded Widmann.
