The 4th Val Gardena Mountain Run takes place on Sunday

To date, more than 400 athletes have registered, with more than 330 taking part in the Italian Championships with a FIDAL license, and a further 70 without a license will be part of the 4th edition of the Val Gardena Mountain Run. The organizers around Manuela Perathoner are more than satisfied and are expecting further last-minute registrations on Saturday and Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, the participation of renowned athletes has already been confirmed, such as Antonella Confortola, Emanuele Manzi and Marco De Gasperi, the twin brothers from Piedmont Martin and Bernard De Mattei, while former world champion Antonio Molinari will compete with some young athletes. Also taking part will be the strong South Tyroleans Renate, Hannes and Albert Rungger, as well as Gerd Frick, the multiple national champion Edeltraud Thaler and the strong Trentino native Francesca Iachemet, while the local heroes from Val Gardena will include the Nordic combined athletes from the national team Lukas and Mattia Runggaldier and Samuel Costa will be there, as will Georg Piazza, most recently in second place at the Ötzi Alpin Marathon on April 25th.

Sunny weather with temperatures above 20 degrees is forecast for Sunday's race until the afternoon. Nothing should stand in the way of a great day of racing, both for the athletes on the track and for the spectators in front of the backdrop of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.

The schedule

The distribution of start numbers begins on Saturday, June 6th, 2015, while the racing program focuses on Sunday, June 7th. There are a total of three start times that are tailored to different categories: the men's senior and pro categories start at 10 a.m. at Ortisei's train station square. At 10.40 a.m., the Junior male, Senior and Pro female categories, as well as the Senior M60 category, will start at Praplan above St. Jakob/Sacun. The race for the junior female categories finally begins at 10.50 a.m. from the Gamsbluthütte at the foot of the Seceda. The destination is at the mountain station of the Seceda cable car at 2.457 m above sea level.

The race course

The course of the Val Gardena Mountain Run is now in its fourth edition and is well-tried. From the center of St. Ulrich, the race track runs through the alleys of the village up to the St. Jakob/Sacun district and then leads into the wide valley basin of Col Raiser and Seceda. Depending on the racing class, the route length and the difference in altitude change. The athletes in the Senior/Pro Male categories tackle a 14,5 km long route with an altitude of 1247 meters. The Junior Male, Senior/Pro Female and Senior M60 categories, however, have to overcome 7,5 km and 630 meters of altitude, while the route for the Junior Female age group measures 4,8 km and around 500 meters of altitude.
