Andreas Reiterer shows off at the Ultra Trail World Tour on Mont Blanc

After a short summer break, the Ultra Trail World Tour started the second half of the season with the competitions on Mont Blanc on August 27th and 28th. In the Ultra Trail Classic UTMB - CCC, the participants ran on various trails at the foot of the 4.010 meter high Mont Blanc mountains and crossed three national territories. After starting on Italian soil in the mountain village of Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley, the route continued across the Swiss border into the German-speaking canton of Valais. The second part of the route to the destination Chamonix was on French territory. A total of 2.113 runners took part, with 1.727 reaching the finish.

Just looking at the start list it was clear that the entire elite of the ultra trail scene from all over the world had gathered in Courmayeur. The UTMB – CCC was the dress rehearsal for the Ultra Trail World Championships, which will take place in Thailand in November. Andreas Reiterer has already achieved several good results this year and, thanks to his previous achievements, started as one of the top 5 runners. From the start he took command of the leading group and led them during the first climbs and descents. Breaking weather creates difficult conditions Immediately after the second aid station at kilometer 25, a violent thunderstorm with heavy rain broke out. Despite the more difficult conditions and the slippery surface, the runners' pace remained high. Halfway through the race, a group of three consisting of the Swede Petter Engdahl, the Briton Jonathan Albon and Reiterer broke away from the other runners.

From then on it was a three-way battle for the day's victory. While the Engdahl was able to gain a comfortable lead over the last 20 kilometers, a bitter battle for second place was raging in the background. For a long time it looked as if the Haflinger had the faster legs. A fall on the last descent a few kilometers before the finish cost him too much time and energy. Plagued by pain, but egged on by hundreds of spectators, Reiterer reached the finish with a time of 10.23,16:XNUMX hours and thus secured the podium place he had hoped for.

Reiterer, who competed for the Asics Ultra Trail Team, was visibly moved after the race: “For me, a long-awaited dream has come true. I prepared so hard and specifically for this competition. It feels awesome to be on the podium here. The race was really very difficult, the pace was kept extremely high right from the start and the heavy rain made the trails even more slippery. Unfortunately, I fell on the last descent and had to give Albon second place. Nevertheless, I am overjoyed.
