Athletic Club 96 Bozen at the “Finale Oro” in Cisinello Balsamo

After the club from the South Tyrolean capital became team regional champions for the 14th time in the summer, the Bolzano athletes continued to collect points diligently in these weeks and qualified for the A final with a total of 18.160 points. Only Enterprise Sport & Service from Benevento (19.275), Atletica Riccardi Milan (18.777) and Atletica Studentesca Milardi Rieti (18.504) achieved an even higher number of points.

The Athletic Club 96 has been taking part in the national finals continuously since 2005. After 2007 in Palermo, 2010 in Borgo Valsugana, 2014 in Milan and 2015 in Jesolo, the people of Bolzano are competing in the highest class, the “Finale Oro”, for the fifth time. “So far our best result was the surprising fourth place last year in Jesolo. We want to place ourselves among the eight best teams in Italy again this year. Our dream would be to get on the podium, but unfortunately we have to do without some injured top athletes at the final,” regrets club president Bruno Telchini.

With Dal Molin, Juarez, Makalla and Menz, four key players are missing In Bolzano, four important pillars are missing: the hurdle specialist Paolo Dal Molin, the sprinter Isalbet Juarez, the Kenyan Daudi Makalla and Manfred Menz, who held his own in the pole vault last year. Nevertheless, Athletic Club 96 can field a strong, balanced team. The oldest athlete is the shot putter Marco Dodoni, born in 1972, while the pole vaulter Nicolò Fusaro is the youngest in the squad at just 17 years old. Like last year, the captain of the team is Pierluigi Putzu. The national team's walker, Leonardo Dei Tos, the middle-distance runner Abdessalam Machmach and the throwers should particularly score points. Two top athletes, Hubert Göller and the young Kalterer Andreas Zagler, are competing in the javelin throw. Zagler, along with Alessandro Monte, Raffaele Fusaro, Nicolò Fusaro and Kevin Giacomelli, is one of the five young local athletes who have the chance to compete at the “Finale Oro”.

Each individual team is allowed to field 20 athletes in at least 16 different disciplines (no more than two athletes per competition and only one relay). The winner of a competition receives 8 points, the second place receives 7 up to the eighth who receives one point). The team with the most points is crowned Italian champion.
