World Association President Sebastian Coe made this clear again on Thursday. The Council of the World Athletics Association was unanimous in this opinion, emphasized the Briton after a meeting of the committee. While the Russian association has been suspended since 2015 following several doping scandals, individual athletes have been able to apply for permission to compete in recent years. Coe justified this by saying that, on the one hand, Ukrainian athletes could no longer compete because of the war, while on the other hand, athletes from Russia and Belarus would still be there. Their exclusion has nothing to do with the question of whether they could do something for the war. Belarus also faces sanctions The association of Belarus, which supports the Russian attack on Ukraine, has also been hit with sanctions and, among other things, is no longer allowed to host international competitions for the time being. Athletes, coaches and officials from Russia and Belarus were already excluded from all upcoming World Athletics Series events on March 1st. These include the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade in just over a week and the Outdoor World Championships in Eugene in July. However, the work of the task force and experts to reintegrate the Russian association is not yet to be completed yet. There is a corresponding recommendation, said Rune Andersen, the head of the task force, with a view to progress with Russia's association. However, there could still be consequences here because of the Russian attack. The Russian association is not yet ready to resume, Andersen emphasized.
