In the women's 5 km race, which starts at 15 p.m., there is likely to be a three-way battle between the Ethiopians Gelete Burka, vice world champion in the 10.000 m, and Etenesh Diro, one of the world's best obstacle runners, as well as the Kenyan cross world champion Agnes Tirop. Demadonna also expects a lot from the British Stephanie Twell, European team champion in cross-country running, and the Swiss marathon specialist Maja Neuenschwander. Elinor Kirk from Wales, who came fourth last year, could also cause a surprise. The best “Azzurra” in the field is Giulia Viola, while Silvia Weissteiner unfortunately has to miss out due to a knee injury. After her victory in the half marathon on Lake Garda in November, the 37-year-old really wanted to compete in Bolzano, but now has to cancel due to injury.

Ethiopian duel Merga against Edris for men In the men's race - they start at 15.30 p.m. over 10 km - there will probably be the eighth victory for an Ethiopian this year. Audience favorite Imane Merga, the winner in 2010, 2012 and 2013, is aiming for his 8th podium finish in a row; his strongest opponent is young star Muktar Edris (first in 2014). Two strong Kenyans also want to be at the front. Jairus Birech is the only 3000m steeplechase to stay under 8 minutes in the last three years and Thomas Longosiwa is also one of the best in the world (13.01 minutes over 5000m this year). Other aces in the field of participants are the Swiss European marathon champion Tadesse Abraham, the Moroccan Aziz Lahbabi, third in 2013, the Briton Ross Millington and the Norwegian Sandre Moen.

Italy's hopes are Yema Crippa, who comes from Ethiopia and grew up in Trentino, Razine, Bamoussa, the twins Dini and Xavier Chevrier. Three South Tyroleans are also at the start: Markus Ploner, Matthias Steinwandter and Andrea Tomei. The two elite races will be broadcast live on RAI Sport.
