BOclassic: Olympic medalists under the Christmas tree

In the last two years, the winner of the BOclassic was chosen in a thrilling final spurt. That could also be the case this year. The strong Imane Merga has serious competition from Thomas Longosiwa. The 30-year-old Kenyan secured the bronze medal at the London Olympics in a thrilling 5000m final behind Mo Farah and Dejen Gebremeskel. This year, Longosiwa also achieved his personal best of 12:49.04.

By the way: At the Letzigrund meeting in Zurich, Longosiwa clearly left Merga behind this year. "One who almost became an Olympic champion will also run for victory in Bolzano. Longosiwa is just as strong as Merga. It will be an exciting race," predicts athlete manager Gianni Demadonna. The American Scott Bauhs, fifth in 2010, is also strong enough to annoy the stars. 10.000 m European champion Jan Fitschen, on the other hand, withdrew yesterday due to an inflammation of his Achilles tendon. The Azzurri are represented by Olympic finalist Yuri Floriani (3000m steeplechase) and 5000m Italian champion Stefano La Rosa. The fight for South Tyrol's number one between Markus Ploner and Peter Lanziner also promises excitement.

Kibet versus Godfay the women's duel

For the women, there is also a duel between Kenya and Ethiopia. Sylvia Kibet will have to work really hard to win in Bolzano for the second time after 2007. The Kenyan faces competition from last year's runner-up. The 20-year-old Ethiopian Afera Godfay only had to admit defeat to world champion Vivian Cheruiyot in the final sprint in 2011. After the disappointing tenth place last year, the Moroccan Btissam Lakhouad, fourth in the 2011 World Championships over 1500 m, wants to know it this year. After her excellent third place last year, Silvia Weissteiner would like to run for a podium place again this year. The BOclassic also includes the Ladurner Volkslauf (31th edition), the Raiffeisen youth runs (9th edition) and the BOclassic Handbike (30th edition) on December 4st.
