Bozen City Trail: 220 starters ensure a running festival

On the 27 kilometer long route with 1200 meters of altitude, Hannes Rungger from Sarn and Agnes Tschurtschenthaler from Sexten prevailed. Daniel Pattis (Tiers) and Fabiola Conti, who lives in Vipiteno, won the Bozen City Run (16 kilometers, 400 meters in altitude). 220 athletes took part in the popular trail event in the South Tyrolean state capital.

At the premiere of the Bozen City Trail in October 2018, Hannes Rungger confidently celebrated the day's victory. The 38-year-old from Sarner repeated this success on Sunday at the third edition of the Bolzano Trail spectacle, the route of which leads partly through the old town and partly over the famous Bolzano promenades. For a long time, the athlete from the sports team fought a thrilling head-to-head race with local hero Marco De Salvador. While Rungger was able to break away again and again in the upward passages, De Salvador came after him downwards. On the climb on the old Jenesier Road, Rungger finally made the decisive attack and won the trail run in 1:59.50 hours. De Salvador ended up in second place, 1.19 minutes behind, while Helmuth Mair (SG Eisacktal Raiffeisen) completed the podium. The veteran had a time of 2:09.05 hours.

In the women's race, Agnes Tschurtschenthaler from Sesto celebrated an unchallenged start-to-finish victory. The 38-year-old, who competes for ASV Niederdorf Raiffeisen, ran a lonely race and completed the 27-kilometer route with 1200 meters of altitude in 2:16.59 hours. Second place went to Birgit Klemm (ASV Gherdeina Runners), who completed the Bolzano Trail distance in 2:41.53 hours. Irene Zamboni (Marathon Club Trento), however, took third place with a time of 2:42.41 hours. Pattis and Conti are ahead in the City Run Daniel Pattis won the day in the Bozen City Run, which was 16 kilometers long and had an altitude difference of 400 meters. The 22-year-old from Tiers, who is one of the strongest young mountain runners in the world, reached the finish after 1:04.34 hours. The athlete from the ASD Südtirol Team Club was almost half a minute ahead of Georg Premstaller from Sarn (ASC LF Sarntal Raiffeisen/+29 seconds), who was happy with second place. Premstaller's top result is all the more important because the Sarner is usually used on flat surfaces and on roads. Luca Clara (Tornado), however, took third place with a time of 1:05.39 hours.

Fabiola Conti (Torino Road Runners) prevailed in the women's category. The Milanese, who lives in Vipiteno and competes for a Turin club, won in 1:19.35 hours. Second and third places, however, went to two athletes from the ASC LF Sarntal Raiffeisen: Barbara Vasselai - last year's winner of the Bozen City Run - crossed the finish line at Waltherplatz after 1:22.01 hours, Karolina Thaler exactly four minutes after her teammate. Last year's winner of the Bozen City Trail, Irene Senfter from Lana, achieved fourth place on the shorter route this time. “The athletes adhered to the safety and hygiene measures” Around 20 recreational athletes took part in the Bozen City Enjoy fun run, which was six kilometers long and led from the old town to the valley meadows. They covered the route partly by running and partly on foot. “We are really very satisfied, be it with the number of participants or with how we ran the race. A big compliment goes to all the athletes who adhered to the safety and hygiene measures in an exemplary manner,” said Roberta Agosti, Andreas Daum (both Bozen Tourist Office), Dorothea Kelderer (SC Neugries) and Sonja Abrate (Ökoinstitut) afterwards the Bozen City Trail 2020 balance sheet. The voices of the winners Hannes Rungger (winner Bozen City Trail): “That was the first and only race for me this year. First there was the lockdown, then unfortunately I was injured. That's why I really wanted to start here and of course I'm super satisfied. The route was steeper and more difficult than in previous years. I lost quite a bit in the downward sections, but in the end I simply had greater reserves of strength.”

Agnes Tschurtschenthaler (winner Bozen City Trail): “The route is really beautiful and demands everything from you. I found the downward sections to be technically very demanding. I feel very good, but at the moment I don’t know exactly which races I will take part in this year.”

Daniel Pattis (winner Bozen City Run): “I was a little surprised because the route was steeper than expected. I felt very good throughout the entire race and of course I'm happy with the win. Now I will do a few more cross-country races and maybe take part in one or two races on the road.”

Fabiola Conti (winner Bozen City Run): “I was there for the first time today and I really enjoyed the Bozen City Run.
