Brixen is the Mecca for track and field athletes at the end of July

Last year, the Isarco Valley's candidacy was elected almost unanimously. At the presentation of the Italian championship on Tuesday, in addition to President Bruno Cappello, his deputy Karl Heinz Plaseller, general secretary Ilse Ogriseg, the mayor of Brixen Peter Brunner, former athletics president Stefano Andreatta, Elio De Anna, board member of the national athletics association, Stefan Leitner from the South Tyrolean were present Sporthilfe and the former top South Tyrolean athletes Christian Obrist and Armin Kerer were present.

The Italian championship takes place exactly 10 years after the U18 World Cup in South Tyrol in 2009. This was the largest athletics event in South Tyrol's history. 2150 young athletes from 5 continents and 178 different nations took part in Brixen. At the 2019 Italian Championship in the General Class, there will be opportunities to see again those athletes who were in the U2009 national team in 18 and are now at the forefront internationally in the General Class. Just think of the two high jumpers Alessia Trost and Gimbo Timberi. Trost won World Cup gold in 2009, although Timberi was eliminated in qualifying, but is now one of the strongest high jumpers in the world. However, the latter had to withdraw due to injury.

At the last title fights in Brixen, 7 years ago, the South Tyrolean athletes won 2 gold medals with Christian Obrist over 1500 m and Silvia Weissteiner over 5000 m. Obrist also secured silver over 800 m, and the Merano discus thrower Hannes Kirchler took bronze. The 13-time Italian champion will not take part in 2019 as he is still injured. With the Puster 400 m hurdles ace Valentina Cavalleri, 400 m runner Petra Nardelli from Eggen and the Bolzano high jumper Alberto Masera, three other South Tyrolean hopefuls also have to miss out due to injuries.

The local hopes therefore lie with Caren Agreiter. The 23-year-old medical student from Bruneck is currently in top shape and is registered in the 400 m hurdles with the fourth best time of 58.35 seconds. Only Ayomide Folorunso (54.75), Linda Olivieri (55.97) and Rebecca Sartori (56.89) were faster than the Pustertaler this year. Alexander Demetz also has a chance of a top ranking. The Val Gardena decathlete is registered in 6.734th place with 6 points. The quartet from the Athletic Club Bozen with 200 m ace Antonio Infantino, the U23 European Championship third place in the 400 m, Brayan Lopez, 800 m runner Abdessalam Machmach and long jumper Antonino Trio are also aiming for a medal.

“Brixen is now hosting an Italian championship for the third time, which is incredible for a city with only 3 inhabitants. Unfortunately, some of our top athletes are missing, but I'm still looking forward to the title fights with confidence," says Cappello happily.

It starts on Friday at 11.20 a.m. with the 100 m sprint for the decathletes. A total of 1.200 athletes will fight for 42 Italian championship titles in Brixen this weekend. The Italian championship is also the last dress rehearsal for the European team championship, which will take place from August 9th to 11th in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The World Cup is on the program in Doha from September 27th to October 6th.

The general class Italian Athletics Championships in Brixen were officially presented on Tuesday. The medals will be awarded on July 26th, 27th and 28th. This means that the title fights are returning to the episcopal city after 7 years.
