Bruno Cappello remains South Tyrol's head of athletics

Cappello took office as state president for the first time eight years ago, after Armin Bonamico's term in office. Today the 71-year-old from Brixen was re-elected until 825 with 840 of the 2024 votes given. Before his election as president, Cappello, a qualified sports teacher, was a coach at SSV Brixen, where he managed to lead five athletes into the national team. His protégés won 33 medals at the Italian Championships, 18 of them gold. From 1998 to 2004 and from 2010 to 2012, Cappello was the national all-around coach. From 1981 to 1987 he was a state youth coach and from 1988 to 2009 he was a state coach. Cappello has also made a name for himself as technical director of the Youth World Cup “South Tyrol 2009” as well as numerous national and international events. In his speech, Cappello looked back on four successful years. 31 local athletes made it into the national team, and a total of 83 athletes reached the podium at the Italian Championships. The number of important events in our country has also increased. From the international Brixia youth meeting to the general class Italian championship, which returned to Brixen in 2019 after 15 years. Several all-around events also took place in Lana: the Italian Championships from 2014 to 2017, and even the international “IAAF Multistars Meeting” in 2019. And don't forget other events such as the “Sprint Meeting” in Meran, the “Memorial Criscuolo” and the “Meeting City of Bozen”. He is also particularly pleased that South Tyrol will be able to boast a real gem in the future with the completion of the ultra-modern facility in Bruneck this year. Eight candidates applied for the six places in the regional association. The incumbent board members Edmund Lanziner (476 votes), Clara Obexer (421), Alessio Fuganti (373) and Peter Calò (367) were re-elected. However, Paolo Valt from Bolzano (638 votes) and Franco Cubich from Brixen (367) are new. Martin Sanin (322) from Merano no longer made it onto the board, while Nicolas Monese decided not to run again. Sergio Tonetti was also confirmed as auditor.
