Bruno Cappello is the new athletics boss in South Tyrol

After eight years, Armin Bonamico was no longer available for the office of president. The only candidate was Bruno Cappello from Brixen. He was elected with a large majority. Things got exciting when the board was elected. At Cappello's request, the state assembly decided to expand the board from six to eight people, as was the case four years ago. There were ten people to choose from. The previous vice-presidents Edmund Lanziner (Truden), Clara Obexer (Terlan), Manuel Pastore (Brixen), Carlo Boninsegna (Meran), Josef Platter (Laas) and Alberto Saveri (Bozen) were re-elected to the board. New additions include the former Etschaffenke president Pietro Calò (Bozen) and the former Italian decathlon champion Hubert Indra (Lana). Long-time secretary Clara Obexer received the most votes.

For Cappello it is the first political office in athletics. As coach of SSV Brixen, the qualified sports teacher led five athletes into the national team. His protégés won 33 medals at the Italian Championships, 18 of them gold. From 1998 to 2004 and since 2010, Cappello has been the national all-around coach. From 1981 to 1987 he was a state youth coach and from 1988 to 2009 he was a state coach. Cappello has also made a name for himself as technical director of the Youth World Championships "South Tyrol 2009" as well as numerous national and international events in Brixen.

Cappello was pleased with the 91 percent approval from the numerous club representatives. His greatest thanks went to his predecessor Armin Bonamico for the valuable development work over the past few years. "The newly elected board is characterized by continuity. Building on this, we will add new ideas. Cappello will begin his mandate with a book presentation. In January, doping hunter Stefano Donati will present his much-discussed book "Lo sport del doping" in Bolzano, "to to make it unmistakably clear how we stand on the issue of doping," said Cappello. The new board would like to provide impetus against the high drop-out rate among those over 16 years old through new competitions - possibly together with Trentino. Cappello would also like to bring more regional championships back to South Tyrol. Athletics at the highest level also requires an innovative solution to improve the training situation in the coldest season. According to Cappello, the only thing missing from the healthy road running scene is a marathon. South Tyrol is similarly strong in mountain running. That's why he wants to bring a mountain running World Cup to South Tyrol again. As a reminder: The first World Mountain Running Championships took place in St. Vigil in Enneberg in 1985. An urgent structural problem remains the unsatisfactory situation of the athletics facility(s) in Bolzano. “It can’t be the case that Bolzano doesn’t have an athletics facility that deserves the name,” said Cappello. Finally, the new president thanked everyone for their trust and asked all clubs for help in overcoming the challenge.
