Cavalli and Harrasser shine at the Merano sprint meeting

After the Mals meeting was canceled, South Tyrol remained without an athletics event on the track in the summer months for several years. Until 2016, when the Merano sports club launched the sprint meeting, a high-class international event with supporting competitions for U16 youngsters. The people of Meran thus continued the tradition of large athletics events in the Passer city. In the post-war period, the “Dr. Erckert Trophy” was one of the most famous European athletics events. Later in the 1992s, the elite women met in Meran at the international Meran Meeting and in XNUMX the “Disco Meeting” was one of the top events in our region with the participation of world-class athletes such as the then world record holders Calvin Smith and John Drummond Land. Once again international flair in Meran This year too, the organizers brought some “big fish” to Meran, like New Zealand’s sprint ace Zoe Hobbs. The 23-year-old won her top disciplines over 100 and 200 m in a good 11.86 and 24.00 seconds respectively. Ira Harrasser also showed a strong performance in these two races. The 20-year-old from Puster took third and second place in 12.59 and 24.59 seconds, respectively. Federica Cavalli also confirmed her impressive form this year in Meran and won the 400 m in 55.77 seconds. The athlete from the South Tyrol Team Club prevailed ahead of Nancy Demattè from Trentino (57.21) and Anna Cicero (58.15). Cavalli's teammate Isabel Eccli also won the day in the long jump (5.65 m). The South African 200m sprinter Nicholas Ferns was the big star in the men's field. He also lived up to his role as favorite and stopped the time measurement at 21.11 seconds. Simon Zandarco from Gargazon was the best South Tyrolean and came sixth in 22.21 seconds. 400 m runner Oliver Murck from Slovakia won in a good 47.39 seconds. The Bolzano long jumper Destiny Nkeonye won in his flagship discipline with 6.98 m. There was also a South Tyrolean victory in the youth categories. Hanna Pichler from the South Tyrol Team Club won the U16 300 m run in 43.79 seconds. Vittoria Giovanelli from SAB Bozen took second place in the long jump, but like winner Sofia Bertolini, she reached 4.63 m.
