New Year's Eve run in Corona times: Chelimo and Kipkemboi triumph

The women's elite run started at 14 p.m. In the special edition, the top field had to complete ten laps on the flat and fast track in the Safety Park traffic safety center and thus cover twice the distance than they normally do at the BOclassic Südtirol.

As usual, the top African athletes dictated the pace from the start. After three laps, last year's winner Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi, Norah Jeruto and Dorcas Tuitoek were clearly leading the field of eleven and were at this point only three seconds above the world record in a pure women's race.

The gap grew second by second over the following laps. Before the last loop, the trio was around 20 seconds over the target time. On the last lap, Kipkemboi fired up the turbo (2.52) and came within 30.43 seconds of the world record with the winning time of 14 minutes. Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi repeated her success from the previous year when she equalized the course record in the city center of Bolzano in 15.30 minutes. She also took Kenya's 26th victory at the BOclassic Südtirol.

Dorcas Tuitoek (30.44), who like Kipkeomboi comes from Kenya, took second place. Completing the podium was Norah Jeruto (30.47), a native of Kenya but starting for Kazakhstan. As the best “Azzurra”, Giovanna Epis landed in seventh place. She covered the 10 kilometers in the Safety Park traffic safety center in 34.13 minutes. There were no South Tyrolean athletes at the start of the special edition of the Bolzano New Year's Eve Run. Chelimo steals the show For the men who covered 5 kilometers, half the distance of a “normal” New Year's Eve run in Bolzano, the experts expected an Ethiopian to be successful. But in the end neither Muktar Edris nor Telahun Haile Bekele nor Tadese Worku celebrated. In the end, the winner of the day came from Uganda for the first time in 45 years of BOclassic Südtirol. Oscar Chelimo prevailed in 13.17 minutes and stole the show from his highly competitive competitors.

Second place went to Robin Hendrix, who set a new Belgian record over 2 kilometers in 13.19 minutes and missed the European record by just one second. Iguider Abdelaati from Morocco came third. His final time was 5 minutes, the same as that of fourth-placed Yeman Crippa. The Trentino native, who was also chasing the European record, missed it by two seconds. However, Abdelaati set a Moroccan record and Crippa set a new Italian record.

Markus Ploner achieved a respectable success, covering the 5 kilometers in a very strong 14.47 minutes and ending up in 14th place. For the Vipiteno native, who lives in Bolzano, it was his 18th participation in the BOclassic South Tyrol - that's a record. Organizer satisfied The organizers were also satisfied: “This special edition of the BOclassic Südtirol, which was also able to carry the WorldAthletics Bronze Label in this special year, was a complete success, even if in the end it just didn’t manage to set a record,” said Andreas Widmann , President of the organizing runners club Bozen Raiffeisen concluded.
