Munich (SID) Mountain running instead of biathlon: double Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier is fighting for World Cup medals again. The German Athletics Association (DLV) nominated the 26-year-old, who ended her biathlon career in May, for the long-distance world championships in mountain running. Dahlmeier recommended herself for the German team with strong performances in the summer - and confirmed her participation. The competitions will take place on November 15th and 16th in Villa la Angostura, Argentina. "I'm really happy that I can be there," said Dahlmeier when asked by SID, "that's something very special for me. This happened more or less by chance so shortly after my resignation." Dahlmeier won the Zugspitz Basetrail XL over 15 km from Mittenwald to Garmisch-Partenkirchen on June 38,7th - the race was the official World Cup qualification. “After that I got the request, I didn’t hesitate for long,” she said. DLV General Director Idriss Gonschinska told the SID on the sidelines of the World Athletics Championships in Doha that he believes Dahlmeier will also have a successful career as a runner on the flats. "She has," he explained, "extraordinary basic endurance and is a competitor. But I don't know her individual post-career goals." Dahlmeier emphasized that she "doesn't have the same ambitions as at a Biathlon World Championships, where I always ran for victory. For me it's also about the experience." DLV mountain running advisor Kurt König was pleased to have “such a fantastic athlete like Laura on the team. She is not only a good runner, but also a good climber.” König was able to convince Dahlmeier to take part in the World Cup. The DLV team includes a total of five athletes. Gonschinska is also pleased about the “external impact” of the 2017 Female Athlete of the Year for the team. Dahlmeier said goodbye to biathlon in the spring after two gold and one bronze at the 2018 Olympic Games and a total of seven titles at world championships. At the World Championships in Östersund she won her last two of 15 World Championship medals. In the summer, Dahlmeier ran to victory at the Karwendel March over 52 kilometers in August. The World Cup covers a distance of 41,5 km with an altitude difference of 2184 m.
