The only summer track meeting is just around the corner

After the Mals meeting was canceled, South Tyrol remained without an athletics event on the track in the summer months for several years. Until 2016, when the Merano sports club launched the sprint meeting, a high-class international event with supporting competitions for U14 and U16 young talent.

The people of Merano wanted to continue the tradition of large athletics events in the Passer city. In the post-war period, the “Dr. Erckert Trophy” was one of the most famous European athletics events. Later in the 1992s, the elite women met in Meran at the international Meran Meeting and in XNUMX the “Disco Meeting” was one of the top events in our region with the participation of world-class athletes such as the then world record holders Calvin Smith and John Drummond Land.

U20 world champions Romani and Sibilio at the start Meran is also expecting some strong athletes to take part this year. The new U20 world champions Andrea Romani and Alessandro Sibilio, who just a few days ago won a historic gold medal in the 4x400 m relay ahead of the USA and Great Britain with their teammates Gjetja and Scotti at the title fights in Tampere, Finland, have already registered. Romani will compete in the 400 m in Meran, Sibilio the 200 m. In this race last year, Italian champion Eseosa Desalu won in 20,77 seconds. In the women's race, Annalisa Spadotto Scott, as in the first edition, celebrated a double victory (12,09 over 100 m and 24,14 over 200 m).

The meeting offers local athletes a good opportunity to check their form. The general class competitions begin at 18 p.m. with the 100 m races, followed by the 400 m (18.30:200 p.m.) and 19 m (19.50 p.m.) races. The long jump competitions for women and men also take place at the same time. The meeting will conclude at 4:100 p.m. with the 14x16 m relays. The youth competitions in the U15.30 and UXNUMX age groups, however, begin in the afternoon at XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.
