The final of the Youth Grand Prix will be exciting

Last weekend in Brixen and Kaltern the final decisions were made regarding the Youth Grand Prix before the grand finale on Sunday, September 30th in Merano. After five elimination competitions, the 20 athletes with the highest points in the U16 and U14 age groups can take part in the final and fight for the Grand Prix victory. For the under-12s, however, the season is over. The starting position could hardly be more exciting. In the U16s, Raffaele Fusaro (CSS da Vinci) inflicted the first defeat of the season on Markus Puff (SV Lana). For the girls, the top five athletes were within just 46 points. Finally, Magdalena Mittersteiner (SV Lana) celebrated her first win of the season. In the under 14 age group, Sophie Mayr (SSV Bruneck) and Andreas Fuchsberger (SV Lana), who were still unbeaten this season, were missing this time. This paved the way to victory for Isabel Sader (SG Eisacktal) and Nicolò Fusaro (CSS da Vinci), who drew level with his brother Raffaele (U16). The best individual performances were provided by Franziska Kofler (U16) and Fabian Pfeifhofer (U14) with 1.58 m each in the high jump, as well as Ulrich Spiess (U16) and Lea Pircher (U14) with 2:42.44 and 3:19.55 over 1000 m.

Since the final no longer counts towards the team ranking, the winners have already been decided. SV Lana replaced CSS da Vinci as the most successful club. Lana also won the boys' team championship for the first time, but had to narrowly give up his long-standing leadership role with the girls to SG Eisacktal. Leading in the overall ranking before the final are Elena Cortoni (Atl. Gherdeina/U16), Markus Puff (SV Lana/U16), Sophie Mayr (SSV Bruneck/U14) and Andreas Fuchsberger (SV Lana/U14). There is no overall ranking for the U12 age group.

In total, more than 400 young athletes took part this year. 60 percent of them were girls. The age group with the most participants was the U14 with 100 girls and 77 boys. The final begins on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Combi sports field in Meran. At the final, the participants compete in four disciplines. The GP final ranking is the sum of the points from the intermediate ranking and the best three results (1 run, 1 jump, 1 throw) in the final. For the best finalists it is also the dress rehearsal for the U16 Italian Championship from October 5th to 7th in Jesolo.
