That was the night at the World Athletics Championships

The women's 4 x 100 m relay race at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene had an outcome exactly to the taste of the euphoric US audience in Eugene (Oregon). The Americans won in 41,14 seconds ahead of the favored Jamaicans (41,18) and Germany (42,03). In the men's race, the hosts had to settle for silver (37,55) behind Canada (37,48/annual world best) and ahead of Great Britain (37,83).

Jamaica had fielded the three medalists in the 100m sprint with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah (the fourth athlete was Kemba Nelson) - but that wasn't enough that evening. Melissa Jefferson, Abby Steiner, Jenna Prandini and Twanisha Terry were the fastest on the track and most accurate at the relay handover. They achieved a world record of the year on dry land. For the Germans, Alexandra Burghardt was happy about her second medal this year after Olympic silver in Beijing as Mariama Jamanka's bobsleigh pusher. She is trained by the Swiss national coach Patrick Saile, who also looks after Austria's record sprinter Markus Fuchs.

Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay took home her second medal at the legendary Hayward Field stadium, after taking silver in the 1.500 m, taking gold in the 5.000 m race in 14:46,29 ahead of Kenya's Beatrice Chebet (14:46,75) and her compatriot Dawit Seyaum (14:47,36) won. Shortly afterwards she experienced an unexpected flight of fancy when a fan sprinted onto the track and lifted the lightweight into the air. 10.000 m world champion and 5.000 m world record holder Letesenbet Gidey (ETH) missed the podium in fifth place.

Over 800 m, Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir from Kenya won in 1:43,71 minutes ahead of Algeria's Djamel Sedjati (1:44,14) and Canada's Marco Arop (1:44,28). The Portuguese Pedro Pichardo from Cuba secured the triple jump with the world best of 17,95 m ahead of Hugues Fabrice Zango from Burkina Faso (17,55) and Zhu Yaming from China (7,31). In the javelin throw, Anderson Peters from Grenada successfully defended his title with 90,54 m ahead of Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra from India (88,13) and the Czech Jakub Vadlejch (88,09).

In the 4 x 400 m relay heats, Allyson Felix helped the USA reach the final on Sunday with the top time. The most successful track and field athlete in World Cup history actually celebrated her farewell from the big stage with the 4 x 400 m mixed relay at the start and after 19 World Cup medals. After a call from the trainers, she flew back to Eugene. “That’s really cool, I didn’t expect that to happen.” But she doesn’t think she’ll be needed for the final. The decathlon ended dramatically for Canadian Damian Warner, leader in four disciplines, who gave up on the back straight in the 400 m run and grabbed his thigh with his face distorted in pain. The Olympic champion won the all-around meeting in Götzis for the seventh time this year and was considered the top favorite.
