The mountain runners celebrate their return to the Stettiner Hut

In good conditions, last year's winner Armin Larch from Mareit and Severine Petersen, who comes from Munich and now lives partly in Gossensaß, achieved the best time of the day.

At 10 a.m. sharp, the starting signal for the 10 kilometer long, demanding mountain run with an altitude of 1255 meters was given at the parking lot in Pfelders. Top favorite Armin Larch immediately went to the front of the field and gained a lead over his worst opponent, Andreas Innerebner from Sarner, in the first, relatively flat kilometers. Shortly after the Lazinser Alm the tough climb began, which led the participants up the steep serpentines. There, Larch made full use of his qualities and gradually increased the gap to Innerebner. With a top time of 1:01.05 hours, the 24-year-old from Wipptal was the first to cross the finish line at 2875 meters above sea level and thus claimed his second victory in the mountain running classic in the lower Passeier Valley. Because last year's Stettiner Cup took the alternative route to the Grünboden Hütte due to weather conditions, it was Larch's first triumph on the classic route.

“After the many vertical races I recently competed in, I didn’t necessarily expect to win. The climb to the Lazinser Alm is tough. It was also brutally humid there. Where could I make a decisive difference? “I actually pulled away right after the start and ran at my pace until the end,” said Armin Larch at the finish. Second place went to Andreas Innerebner, who reached the finish after 1:03.18 hours, while the youngster from Val Gardena, Samuel Demetz (1:08.12), completed the podium. The performance of Tarcisio Linardi is also worth mentioning. The 58-year-old from Trentino completed the 10 km and 1255 meters of altitude in 1:08.38 hours and thus took fourth place. Local hero Alexander Schweigl, however, was at the start for the 23rd time and has taken part in all of the Stettiner Cups held to date. Petersen outdoes South Tyrolean mountain running queens Severine Petersen won among the women. The Munich native, who lives part-time in Gossensaß, won the Brixen Dolomites Marathon a good month ago and also met the high expectations in Pfelders. Last year's runner-up reached the newly built Stettiner Hut in borrowed shoes after 1:20.24 hours and celebrated their first success in the Passeier Valley. The podium was completed by two big names from the South Tyrolean mountain running scene, namely Stettiner Cup record winner Edeltraud Thaler (five triumphs) and Irene Senfter – both from Lana. Thaler lost around two and a half minutes to Petersen, Senfter reached the finish after 1:25.28 hours.

“The Stettiner Cup 2021 was one of the first mountain races I took part in. Things went really well back then and that's why I wanted to be at the start again this year. I think the route is great and the panorama here in the Passeier Valley is unique. I like it when it gets really steep and I can struggle. That's perhaps why things are going so well at the moment - even though I arrived today without running shoes and had to borrow them from a ten-year-old girl. I have a few blisters now, but I can get over that,” explained Severine Petersen.

Positive balance from the organizers OK President Markus Raich from the Moos Mountain Rescue Service was satisfied with how the 23rd Stettiner Cup went. “The past few days have been very stressful. We always kept an eye on the weather forecasts and of course came up with Plan B and Plan C. Luckily the weather held up and we were able to run on the original route again for the first time since 2019. The participants really enjoyed it because they were able to get an idea of the new, really successful Stettiner Hut. The mountain runners celebrate their return to the Stettiner Hut

The 23rd edition of the Stettiner Cup ended on Sunday with two victories for the favorites. Almost 200 mountain runners took part in the summer classic in the lower Passeier Valley. For the first time in years we went to the Stettiner Hut, located at 2875 meters above sea level.
