A touch of South Tyrol with Paralympic European Championship gold

On Tuesday, the soon-to-be 52-year-old achieved his big success. With an outstanding distance of 11.17 meters and a lead of 1.07 meters over second-placed Croatian Deni Cerni, Campoccio confidently secured first place. The gold medal at the European Para Athletics Championships in Berlin is the first European medal in its category. He dedicated his success, among other things, to his wife, who has been by his side for years.

He already achieved an outstanding third place at the 2017 Para World Championships in London. “Joe Black,” as he is nicknamed, competed in the F33 category, which means he throws or pushes from a seated position due to an impairment of his legs and torso area.

On Wednesday at 18 p.m. the Italian, whose mother tongue is German, will compete in the javelin throw and will try to achieve the best possible result there too. The passionate athlete can still do a lot.

Campoccio has been physically disabled since a serious accident during his military service in 1991. An infection in August 2015 forced the South Tyrolean living in Cassino into a wheelchair. Shortly before, he had joined the Ministry of Defense's Paralympic sports group, which was founded in 2014.

Cassino, the current home community of the Puster native, appointed him as a sports ambassador in the run-up to the European Championships in Berlin.

According to his own statements on his Facebook page, one of the old champion's goals is the Paralympic Games in Tokyo 2020. If the 19-time Italian record holder in the shot put, discus and javelin throws in the F33 and F34 categories maintains his outstanding form, a medal is for him then well within reach of almost 54 year olds.
