Local athletes shine at the Merano sprint meeting

After the Mals meeting was canceled, South Tyrol remained without an athletics event on the track in the summer months for several years. Until 2016, when the Merano sports club launched the sprint meeting, a high-class international event with supporting competitions for U16 youngsters. The people of Meran thus continued the tradition of large athletics events in the Passer city. In the post-war period, the “Dr. Erckert Trophy” was one of the most famous European athletics events. Later in the 1992s, the elite women met in Meran at the international Meran Meeting and in XNUMX the “Disco Meeting” was one of the top events in our region with the participation of world-class athletes such as the then world record holders Calvin Smith and John Drummond Land. New sprint talent in South Tyrolean athletics This year too, the organizers brought some “big fish” to Merano, like Czech sprint ace Jan Veleba. The 35-year-old won his flagship discipline over 100 m at the same time as the Italian young talent Federico Guglielmi in a strong 10.22 seconds. In the 200 m, Veleba came second in 21.53 seconds, behind Alessandro Ori (21.15 seconds). Jonas Steinwandter also showed a great performance in these two races. The 19-year-old figurehead from SSV Bruneck took fifth and third place in 10.77 and 21.54 seconds, respectively. For Steinwandter these were two new best times. Petra Nardelli from Eggen was also able to impress in Meran and won the 400 meters in 55.12 seconds, ahead of her teammate Federica Cavalli (58.05 seconds). Nora Rinner, also from the South Tyrol Team Club, came third in the long jump with 5.02 meters. Mattia Pivetta from the Bolzano club CSS Leonardo Da Vinci timed the 400 meters in 51.25 seconds, which was enough for second place behind Francesco Capovilla (2 seconds) from Trentino. High jumper Marta Morara (50.62 meters) and 1.86 meter runner Aurora Berton (200 seconds) showed brilliant performances. There were also three South Tyrolean victories in the youth categories. Ronja Hilber from SV Lana won the U16 long jump with 5.15 meters, while her teammate Frederic Schöpf won the boys' event with 5.65 m. Maximilian Springeth won the high jump with 1.75 meters.

Under optimal conditions, there were excellent results for the South Tyrolean athletes at the 7th sprint meeting, the second athletics meeting on the track in South Tyrol, in the Merano Combi Stadium.
