Two surprise winners at the Boston Marathon - Gabius has no chance

Boston (SID) The Japanese Yuki Kawauchi and the US runner Desiree Linden surprisingly won the 122nd edition of the Boston Marathon. In extremely adverse weather conditions, Kawauchi came out on top in 2:15:58 hours, ahead of long-time leading world champion and last year's winner Geoffrey Kirui (Kenya/2:18:23). "My calf muscles immediately shut down in temperatures around freezing point and icy headwinds with snow/rain," he said: "Unfortunately it didn't make any sense. I certainly don't have to explain in more detail how I'm feeling right now." In the women's race, Linden, who finished seventh at the Olympics, was the first time a US runner had won the traditional event since 1985. The 34-year-old won in 2:39:54 ahead of her compatriot Sara Sellers (2:44:04) and Canadian Krista Duchene (2:44:20). "I just never gave up. For me these were the best possible conditions," said Kawauchi, who intercepted his exhausted competitor in the last few kilometers. Linden stated: "I have no words for the fact that I won." During the entire run, temperatures were around freezing point, it was raining and the runners had to deal with headwinds. US media reported the lowest temperatures at a Boston Marathon in decades. Due to the weather conditions, the Boston Red Sox baseball game against the Baltimore Orioles was canceled. The world's oldest city marathon was overshadowed by bomb attacks five years ago. The attackers detonated two bombs in the target area, killing three people and injuring 264 others.
