Explosions at the Boston Marathon – South Tyroleans are doing well - UPDATE 2

It is still unclear how many victims there were in the explosions. News agencies are currently reporting two deaths and, according to the latest information, between 100 injured. The cause of the two explosions 30 meters and 150 meters from the target in the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel is not yet 100 percent clear.

However, in the last few hours the suspicion has been confirmed that it was an attack. Two other explosive devices are said to have been defused later before they could explode. In addition, a third incident occurred at the J. F. Kennedy Library, five kilometers away, a few hours after the two detonations. There is also still speculation as to whether these attacks were terrorist or right-wing extremist.

"Within 200 meters, two explosions occurred just a few seconds apart, close to the finish line. There was a third incident half an hour ago at the J. F. Kennedy Library. We cannot yet provide any information about the background to the crime. "We ask everyone to stay in the hotels because it is an ongoing situation. We also ask them not to stay in large groups. We do not yet know whether there is a connection between the explosions," a police spokesman said at a press conference.

Hermann Achmüller: “We are doing well”

A total of 26.000 runners took part in the Boston Marathon on Monday, including three South Tyroleans: top athlete Hermann Achmüller, his partner Tiziana Pignatelli and Steven Stuffer from Val Gardena. Achmüller crossed the finish line in 2.28th place after 58 hours, around an hour and a half before the detonations. Pignatelli and Stuffer also arrived at the target about half an hour before the explosion.

"I'm in shock, even though I didn't directly witness the detonations. Tiziana and I were already in the hotel when it happened. I cried for a moment. You don't expect an attack at an event like this. I can't understand how you can do something like that. I was so happy that I ran the marathon well. A marathon is such a peaceful event. Everyone is happy that they did it. And then something like this happens. It's unbelievable. Steven Stuffer is also arrived at the finish. I haven't heard him yet because the network here is constantly overloaded. But I'm assuming that he's doing well too," Hermann Achmüller said exclusively in a telephone interview SportNews -Editor Hannes Kröss.
