Favorite victories at the Kalterersee half marathon

The organizers hoped to break the 1.000 participant mark at this year's edition. “We were on the right track. But when the weather models increasingly pointed to bad weather, registrations stopped,” said President Frieda Viertler of the South Tyrolean Running Club. Nevertheless: more than 900 participants are an impressive number.

The conditions in Kaltern were initially perfect for hosting a half marathon: temperatures around 12°C, and the forecast rain only started during the course of the race. It is probably due to the light drizzle that there was no record time. Hannes Rungger said after the finish: "The conditions were not perfect. Due to the rain, the track became slippery and probably prevented a better time."

The 30-year-old from Sarner entered the race as the big favorite and lived up to his role as favorite. A quick first lap was followed by a somewhat more leisurely second lap. “I'm not entirely happy with the race. But it's actually satisfactory for the start of the season. I'm convinced that I can still improve," explains Rungger. Last year, the man from Sarn was able to distance himself from the competition by more than a minute. This year, Georg Brunner crossed the finish line just 10 seconds behind the winner. Both were the only ones to finish 1:10 hours. Rungger needed 1:08.46. Third-placed Rudi Brunner crossed the finish line with a respectable gap of more than two minutes.

There was deja vu in the women's race: Edeltraud Thaler was once again in the lead after the first lap, but again she was unable to win the race. Monica Carlin created a novelty. The 42-year-old GS Valsugana athlete was the first woman to win on Lake Kaltern for the second time. "I like this run. It's good training for me at this early point in the season and gives me the opportunity to see how far I've come," says the winner. She was happy to have won the race again, even if the conditions weren't hers: “I prefer it when it's a little warmer. Also, the air was very humid today, and I don't like that." Carlin needed 1:25.03. That made her 25 seconds faster than Thaler and a good two minutes than third-placed Petra Pircher.

Alex Stuffer was once again unbeatable in the panoramic run over half the distance (10,55 km). The same applies to the handbikers Roland Ruepp and Claudia Schuler.
