Five World Championship titles for South Tyrol’s master athletes

Italy won 75 medals in Torun (22 gold, 23 silver and 30 bronze). One of the most successful “Azzurre” in Poland was Ingeborg Zorzi from the Meran Sports Club, who won the W70 age group after winning the high jump with 1.15 m ahead of the Slovenian Marjeta Cad (1.09 m), and also the 60 m hurdles in 12.38 seconds ahead of the Finnish Terhi Kokkonen (12.86) and won the pentathlon with 3867 points. For the former volleyball player and multiple European athletics champion, it was her first gold medal at a world championship.

Manfred Menz and Hubert Göller, both from the Bolzano club Athletic Club 96 Alperia, were also crowned world champions for the first time. Menz only entered the M35 pole vault competition when all of his competitors had already been eliminated. The Merano native won with a good 4,60 m, ahead of his compatriot Marco Chiarello and the German Ingo Mülhöfer, who both achieved 4.15 m. Göller, on the other hand, dominated the M40 javelin throw with 59.93 m and prevailed with a lead of more than two meters over the Czech Libor Partipan (57.71 m).

Two new national records Rudolf Frei from Meran won bronze in the M70 over 800 m and also set a new Italian best in 2:32.97 minutes. Frei only had to admit defeat to the Australian Mayfield (2:31.16) and the Dutchman Smeets (2:32.94). His teammate at the Meran Sports Club, Konrad Geiser, came fifth (2:36.39). In the 400 m, however, Frei narrowly missed out on a medal and came fourth in 1:04.07 minutes, just eight hundredths behind bronze. Geiser also took fourth place in the 1500 m in 5:18.63 minutes. In the 3000 m, however, he finished fifth in 11:37.25 minutes.

On the last day of competition, Frei and Geiser, with Aldo Del Rio from Milan and Roberto Paesan from Rome, took silver in the 4 x 200m relay M70. Here too they set a new Italian record in 1:59.02 minutes. France became world champion (1:56.83).

The next two Masters World Championships will take place in Canada: outdoors in Toronto in 2020 and indoors in Edmonton in 2021. In 2019, however, the European Championships will be held in Italy. From September 5th to 15th, the European Championships will be in the province of Venice, in Jesolo, Caorle and Eraclea.
