Everything is prepared for the 23rd Stettiner Cup

The last time the Stettiner Cup led to its traditional destination – the Stettiner Hut at 2875 meters above sea level – was now three years ago. Last year, a bad weather front put a damper on the running of the mountain run on the original route and so the finish was quickly moved to the Grünbodenhütte. In 2020 it was the Covid19 pandemic that tripped up the Stettiner Cup. This year it will happen again, even if the weather is causing concern again: “A low pressure area has been reported. Whether it will catch us, whether it will leave us out or perhaps only arrive in the afternoon, we cannot say exactly at the current status,” predicts OK boss Markus Raich.

Raich can also anticipate a lot by looking at the list of participants. “The most loyal of the faithful have already agreed. Alexander Schweigl (he has competed in all 22 editions so far, editor's note) was, as always, one of the first. “But last year’s winner Armin Larch also let us know very early on that he would be there again,” says the head of the Moos mountain rescue service happily. Andreas Innerebner from Sarner and Armin Gögele from Merano will also be at the start in Pfelders on Sunday - both are among the favorites. The best-known name among women so far is Edeltraud Thaler. The mountain running veteran from Lana has already won the Stettiner Cup five times and is therefore the record winner. “As always, we will receive numerous registrations in the last two or three days before the event. There will definitely be a few favorites among them,” Raich is convinced.

What's special about this year's edition is the goal. The Stettiner Hut shines in new splendor after the shelter was largely destroyed by an avalanche in 2014. “It officially opened in July. Of course, that gives us a lot of motivation, she’s become a real eye-catcher,” says Raich. The preparations for the Stettiner Cup, however, are almost complete: “We have completed our checklist and are now at a very good point.”

There is good news to report about the route: “We just visited it recently. It is free of snow and debris and is in very good condition.” If the weather cooperates this Sunday, then a record time could be set again. Martin Stofner from Sarner was the fastest among men so far in 2019 (1:01.47 hours), while among women Petra Pircher from Laas has the best time of 1:12.59 hours.

In addition to the family environment and the panoramic route, the extensive starter package is also a reason for the numerous participants to take part in the Stettiner Cup again and again. For the price of 30 euros, all participating mountain runners receive a set of functional gadgets and delicious specialties from the South Tyrolean region. This year, the package includes a Sportland T-shirt with a print of the event, Pseirer Schüttelbrot, bacon from the Hofer butcher shop, Mila yogurt, Loacker products, running socks from Schuhwelt Volgger and a voucher for the Augustiner beer garden in Meran.
