Hannes Kirchler is aiming for his 13th Italian championship title

A total of 49 titles will be awarded in Trieste, which is hosting the Italian Championships again after 40 years. Last year, the South Tyrolean athletes won three medals at the title fights in Rieti. The Merano discus thrower Hannes Kirchler celebrated his 11th title win. In addition, the walker Leonardo Dei Tos, who competes for the Athletic Club 96 Bozen, came second in the 10 km, while Roberta Albertoni from Bolzano came third in the 2x4 m relay for Atletica Brescia.

Kirchler is one of the top favorites again this year. The 38-year-old from Meran from the Carabinieri sports group holds the second best Italian record of the season in the discus throw with 62.60 m behind Giovanni Faloci, who achieved a strong 63.66 m. In Trieste he wants to break the 65m mark and thus also the World Cup standard for London. In addition to Faloci, his strongest competitors are Nazzareno Di Marco (60.55) and Giulio Anesa (59.98). Kirchler is aiming for his 13th Italian championship title this weekend. So far he has won gold nine times at the “Assoluti” (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016), and he won the Italian Winter Championships three times: 2007, 2014 and four months ago in Rieti.

Leonardo Dei Tos is also one of the medal contenders again in the 10km walk. The 25-year-old from Vittorio Veneto, who competes for Athletic Club 96 Bozen, has a season's best time of 40:06.73 minutes. Of the registered athletes, only Gianluca Picchiottino (39:49.26) was faster in Italy this year. His teammate Antonio Infantino even started the race as the fastest athlete over 200 m with a time of 20.59 seconds.

The fourth best time in the 400m hurdles is held by Valentina Cavalleri. But it will be very difficult for the 21-year-old from San Candido, who runs for the army sports group, to get on the podium. Cavalleri has a best time of 58.08 seconds, almost three seconds behind Yadisleidy Pedroso (55.39), Marzia Caravelli (55.83) and Ayomide Folorunso (56.73). Caren Agreiter from Bruneck is also registered in eighth place in this race with 58.70 seconds. Seven-footer Julia Calliari can also do a lot with the Bracco Milano relay this weekend.

Hannes Kirchler is aiming for his 13th Italian championship title

The Italian General Class Athletics Championships will take place in Trieste from Friday, June 30th to Sunday, July 2nd. A total of 937 athletes from 182 different clubs registered. For many it is the last chance to get a ticket for the upcoming World Cup in London (August 4-13).
