Hannes Kirchler is aiming for his 14th Italian championship title

The recently renovated “Stadio Adriatico” in Pescara will host the Italian championship for the third time after 1990 and 1999. A total of 42 titles will be awarded in Abruzzo this weekend. Last year, the South Tyrolean athletes won four medals at the title fights in Trieste: Merano discus thrower Hannes Kirchler celebrated his 13th title win. Hannes Kirchler is once again one of the top favorites in Pescara. The 39-year-old from Meran from the Carabinieri sports group holds the third best Italian record of the season in the discus throw with 63.55 m behind Giovanni Faloci and Nazzareno di Marco, who achieved a strong 64.19 m and 63.62 m. All three “Azzurri” were also at the European Championships in Berlin a month ago, where Kirchler did by far the best from an Italian perspective. The defending champion from Merano is aiming for his 14th title this weekend. So far he has won gold ten times at the general class Italian championships (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017), and he won the winter Italian championship three times: in 2007, 2014 and last year in Rieti .

Leonardo Dei Tos is also one of the medal contenders again in the 10 km walk. The 26-year-old from Athletic Club 96 Bozen has a season's best time of 40:37.51 minutes. Abdessalam Machmach could also achieve a top result in the 800 m. His teammate Antonio Infantino starts the race as the second fastest athlete behind star runner Andrew Howe (200) over 20.65 m with a time of 20.47 seconds. The Val Gardena decathlete Alex Verginer can also do a lot.

The fourth best time in the 400m hurdles is held by Valentina Cavalleri. The 22-year-old from Innichen, who runs for the army sports group, is at her career peak so far and has a best time of 57.30 seconds. The woman from Pusteria definitely has a chance of winning bronze, but Yadisleidy Pedroso (54.98) and Ayomide Folorunso (55.16) will fight for the title. Caren Agreiter from Bruneck is also registered in this race in fifth place with a time of 58.01 seconds. Also not to be underestimated is the newcomer of the year, Petra Nardelli from Eggen, who will take part in the 400 m competition.
