Hannes Kirchler wants to win his 11th Italian championship title

A total of 42 titles are awarded in Rieti. Last year, the South Tyrolean athletes won two gold medals at the title fights in Turin. Silvia Weissteiner celebrated her 5000th title win in the 19m, while Hannes Kirchler was able to assert herself in the discus throw for the 10th time. Lukas Rifesser also made it onto the podium in second place over 800m. While Weissteiner cannot compete in Rieti due to injury, Kirchler is once again one of the top favorites this year. The 37-year-old from Meran from the Carabinieri sports group holds the Italian season's best mark in the discus throw with 64.97 m. In Rieti he wants to break the 65 m mark and thus also the Olympic standard for the games in Rio de Janeiro. His strongest competitors are Nazzareno Di Marco (61.19), Federico Apolloni (60.93) and Giovanni Faloci (60.58). Kirchler is aiming for his 11th Italian championship title in Rieti. So far he has won gold eight times at the “Assoluti” (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2015), and he won the Winter Italian Championships twice (2007 and 2014). Lukas Rifesser is also one of the medal contenders in the 800 m. The 30-year-old from Bruneck has a season's best time of 1:47.98 minutes. Of the registered athletes in Italy this year, only Giordano Benedetti (1:46.66), Jacobo Lahbi (1:47.31) and Gabriele Bizzotto (1:47.81) were faster. Valentina Cavalleri also has the fourth best time in the 400m hurdles. It will be very difficult for the 20-year-old from San Candido, who became Italian runner-up in the U23 age group in Brixen just two weeks ago, to get on the podium. Cavalleri has a best time of 58.68 seconds, two seconds behind Marzia Caravelli (55.69), Ayomide Folorunso (56.68) and Francesca Doveri (56.98).

Hannes Kirchler wants to win his 11th Italian championship title

The Italian General Class Athletics Championships will take place in Rieti from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th June. A total of 946 athletes from 178 different clubs registered. For many it is the last chance to get a ticket for the European Championships in Amsterdam (July 6-10).
