Hannes Rungger is the winter running king

The second stage of the winter run (organized by AS Merano) in Sinich annually attracts South Tyrol's best road runners. Yesterday there were again some of the almost 200 participants (record). The 2,5 km long circuit had to be completed four times. As with the first stage from Algund to Vellau, Hannes Rungger and Gerd Frick set the tone this time too. At km 1 they were able to pull away from the rest of the field. At km 4, Frick could no longer follow Rungger's pace. But the 7-year-old from Merano fought his way up to 35 m from the finish. In the final sprint, Rungger, who was faster, had the better end. Rungger won both winter running stages. Only Frick had achieved this before him in 800 and 2006. “The form structure is right,” says Rungger happily. "Next week I'm running a half marathon on Lake Maggiore. But my big goal for the spring season is the Treviso Marathon." There, the 2009-year-old from Sarner would like to run a marathon under 28:2 hours for the first time.

In the women's category, Gertraud Höllrigl was only beaten by Dobbiaco pharmacist Elena Casaro by two seconds. Casaro won in 37:53 minutes. In return, Höllrigl secured the overall victory in the winter race for the first time in six years. The 30-year-old from Naturns had already won the winter race in 2005. Third place in Sinich this time went to Edeltraud Thaler, who won the first stage of the winter run from Algund to Vellau two weeks ago.
