Hans Rudi Brugger & Co. want to know at the Ultra Skyrace

With Hans Rudi Brugger, Edeltraud Thaler and Regina Spiess, there are three top athletes who have already triumphed over one of the “short” distances at the extreme sports event. Spartan athlete Luca Pescolldungg, on the other hand, is taking part in the established mountain running event for the first time.

Hans Rudi Brugger is immediately associated with FC Südtirol by most South Tyrolean sports fans. No wonder, the 41-year-old from Passiria played 368 games for the white-reds in his career and was one of the top performers in the promotion from Serie D to Serie C2 (in 2000) and ten years later to the third division. After his professional career, Brugger discovered his love for trail running. He has had some success there too. Especially in the mountains between Bolzano and Sarnthein, Hans Rudi Brugger demonstrated his physical abilities with victory in the South Tyrol Sky Trail (2019) and second place in the South Tyrol Sky Marathon (2018). For women, two top athletes have registered for the marathon distance. Edeltraud Thaler is not just the defending champion. With a winning time of 5:08.38 hours, the 55-year-old from Lana set a new course record in 2019. In 2018, Thaler, the grand dame of South Tyrolean running, was the first to reach the finish line on the church square in Sarnthein. She faces competition from Regina Spieß, winner of the South Tyrol Skyrace in 2018 and a year later sensationally second in the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace. Now the 48-year-old from Sarnen is daring to tackle one of the two shorter distances - but will certainly tackle the 44,5 kilometers with 2863 meters of altitude just as ambitiously as the usual long distances, which are canceled this year for safety reasons amid the corona pandemic program were taken.

The organizing committee around OK boss Josef Günther Mair can also present the first “big” name at the South Tyrol Sky Trail. Luca Pescolldungg was crowned European champion in the Spartan Race Mountain Series in 2018 and won the silver medal a year later. With the Italian national team he also won bronze in the team competition (2019). The Gadertaler also won the “6 Summit Skyrace” in Saalbach-Hinterglemm last year. This year Pescolldungg was able to celebrate third place at the premiere of the Ratschings Mountain Trail and just a week later won the LadiniaTrail, which was held as part of the Brixen Dolomites Marathon.

In just over a week, part of the horseshoe tour in the Sarntal Alps will be the venue for the South Tyrol Sky Marathon (44,5 km/2863 meters in altitude) and the South Tyrol Sky Trail (27 km/1800 meters in altitude).
