Hermann Achmüller 27th at the 100 km World Championship

Italy sent five athletes to Croatia, including 47-year-old Hermann Achmüller from Pusteria. The three-time world champion Giorgio Calcaterra, the reigning Italian champion Matteo Lucchese, the winner of this year's “100 km run del Passatore”, Andrea Zambelli and Francesco Lupo from Atletica Imola were also called up.

Achmüller showed a strong performance on the very demanding route (800 meters in altitude and 14 180° curves). The athlete from the Pustertal Running Club started from 70th place, ran an intelligent race and constantly fought his way forward. However, 15 km from the finish, Achmüller collapsed, but in the end he still managed 7th place in 10.55:27 hours. The South Tyrolean was second best “Azzurro” behind star runner Calcaterra (7th in 6:42.35 hours). Francesco Lupo was 48th, the slightly injured Andrea Zambelli was 67th, while Matteo Lucchese had to retire due to stomach problems. As in the previous year, the gold medal went to the Japanese Hideaki Yamauchi in 6:28.05 hours, ahead of his compatriot Takehiko Gyoba (6:32.51) and the South African Bongmusa Mthembu (6:33.47). As was the case two years ago, the Italian national team finished the World Cup in sixth place in 21:31.51 hours, while the victory went to Japan (19:37.01) ahead of South Africa (20:33.49) and Germany (21:02.12).

4th World Cup participation in a row For Achmüller it was the fourth consecutive participation in the 100 km World Championships. In November 2014, on his debut in Doha, he finished 23rd in 7:15:00 hours. The following year, in September 2015, he came in a very good 6.54,50th place in Winschoten, the Netherlands, with the new national record of 14:2016 hours and was named runner-up in the team competition behind Sweden with the Italian national team. In November 7 in Los Alcazares, Spain, he finished 12.38th in 36:2017 hours. The World Cup did not take place in XNUMX. Hermann Achmüller took 30th place in 100:27 hours at the 7th edition of the 10.55 km World Championship in Sveti Martin na Muri, Croatia on Saturday. With the Italian national team he reached 6th place.
