Julia Calliari and Sophia Zingerle Italian champions

Last year the local athletes returned home from the Italian Championships in Rieti with four medals. In Brixen they equalized this performance on the first day of the three competitions. Unlike last year, there were two titles this year. Julia Viktoria Calliari won gold in the 100 m in the U20 age group. The 19-year-old from Siebeneich was also the U16 and U18 Italian champion. “I’m particularly happy about this title because I’m currently studying for my high school diploma and therefore haven’t been able to devote myself fully to training,” said Calliari after the race. She impressed in the preliminary run with a time of 11.20 seconds, and in the final she narrowly beat Senegalese native Sokhona Kebe despite the strong headwind (4.1m/S). Calliari ran 12.32, Kebe was only three hundredths slower. Sophia Zingerle won the second gold medal in the evening. The 17-year-old from Vals, who competes for SG Eisacktal and used to be a good skier, won the 5000m in a new personal best time of 17:17.28 minutes. In doing so, she improved her old record, set a month ago in Rovereto, by over six seconds. Zingerle pulled away in the last kilometer and clearly won ahead of Ilaria Fantinel (17:28.02).

Silver and bronze in javelin throwing The other two medals came in javelin throwing. Both in the U23 age group. In the women's category, Chiara Bergia from SSV Brixen took second place with 42,35 m behind Paola Padovan from Belluno (47,91). The 21-year-old from Cles, who studies in Innsbruck and trains with Marco Andreatta in Brixen, stayed three meters below her record. In the U23 men's category, 20-year-old Andreas Zagler from Kalter, who trains with Paolo Valt at Athletic Club 96 Bozen, took third place with 66.09 m. Gold went to the favorite Roberto Orlando from Campania (68.79), silver to the Lombard Matteo Masetti (67.40).

World-class performance from Jacobs and Rossit Long jumper Marcell Jacobs and high jumper Desirèe Rossit provided the outstanding performances on the first day of the competition in Brixen. 21-year-old Jacobs, his mother is Italian and his father comes from Texas, jumped an incredible 8,48 m. That would actually be a new Italian record in the general class (in 2007, vice world champion Andrew Howe jumped 8.47 m), but unfortunately the distance doesn't count because of the strong tailwind (+2,8). In the high jump, 22-year-old Desirèe Rossit from Friuli managed 1,97 m, which is the new annual world record. The title fights will continue in Brixen on Saturday. From a South Tyrolean perspective, people are particularly excited about the long jump final, where Isabel Eccli from Salur and Thomas Schiffregger from Puster are among the medal contenders.
