Julia Calliari defends U16 Italian championship title over 80 m

Julia Calliari has even exceeded the high expectations. The defending champion won the Italian championship title again over 80 m. This is an absolute rarity in this age group. What was particularly impressive was the way Calliari triumphed. Hans Pircher's protégé (LC Bozen) ran by far the fastest time in the preliminary run with a new national record time of 9.98. In the final, the 15-year-old from Siebeneich improved to 9,90 seconds (tailwind + 0.6), beating her previous best time by 11/100. With this time she moved to sixth place on the Italian all-time best list. Since 2000, only two U16 runners in Italy have been faster than Calliari. The lead of 35 hundredths of a second over second-placed Paola Forghieri from Emilia-Romagna was also record-breaking. This was very reminiscent of superstar Usain Bolt's dominance in his races. Hans Pircher almost brought a second sprinter into the medal ranks. Luca Moranduzzo ran a personal best time of 5 seconds in the preliminary heat (9.35th). In the final, Moranduzzo ran a time of 9.47 against a headwind. This improved him to fourth place, 7/100 behind the bronze medal. Moranduzzo was still the most unlucky person from a South Tyrolean perspective, because he narrowly missed the podium in fourth place in the 4 x 100 m relay.

State coach Karl Schöpf was pleased with nine final places (top 8) and twelve personal bests. Interesting: the South Tyroleans won almost half of the final places in the throwing disciplines, traditionally the South Tyroleans' weakest division. Zoe Chavez (Atl. Gherdeina), who achieved eighth place in the discus throw with 27.81 m, was even the second best thrower of her year (1998) and is still eligible to compete in the under 16 age group next year. “For me, the great results in the throwing disciplines can clearly be attributed to the Youth Grand Prix, where we promote the athletes’ versatility,” said Schöpf. Marco Spagnolli (9th) narrowly missed out on a place in the top eight. The man from Bolzano missed Christian Obrist's 5 m national record by just six seconds in 55.20:2000. The medal hope Anna Lena Hofer (fourth place last year) had to forego the start of the 2000 m. A stress fracture had not yet completely healed. Franziska Kofler (SV Lana) took sixth place in the high jump last year with 1.53 m. Despite an increase of six centimeters, she fell back to seventh place. A proof of the high level of the title fights.

In the regional ranking, South Tyrol improved by one place to 10th place. Karl Schöpf's selection left significantly larger regions such as Sicily and Campania, but also its neighbors from Trentino, behind. The girls took tenth place, the boys rose three places to eleventh place compared to the previous year.
