No cell phone contract – because he has cancer

When he recently wanted to sign a cell phone contract with a minimum term of 24 months, this was rejected. He explains the reason in an interview with the magazine “Bunte”: “My request was rejected on the grounds that I probably couldn’t fulfill the minimum term due to my illness.”

Many users online reacted in shock. “I have rarely experienced so little heartlessness,” wrote one user on Twitter. “I've experienced a lot of things that leave you stunned. But this is really going too far,” said another Twitter user.

Lobinger has been suffering from acute leukemia since March 2017. He has undergone five rounds of chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant and radiation treatments. He is currently feeling “good” and is doing a lot of exercise. But the cancer cells are still in his body. The 46-year-old is not thinking about giving up: “I want to win this fight. Of course, sometimes I cry or lie awake at night because I'm worried about the family." His goal: to see his three-year-old son start school.

When he was active, Lobinger was one of the strongest pole vaulters in Germany. After his career ended, he worked as a personal fitness trainer for the footballer Aljaksandr Hleb and later as an athletic trainer for the then second division club RB Leipzig.
