The national athletics association celebrates Armin Bonamico

98 participations in the Olympic Games, World and European Championships, 16 medals at international level, including Alex Schwazer's Olympic victory in 2008. At the Italian Championships there were 190 medals - 78 of them gold. Added to this are the countless successes of the Masters athletes: around 500 medals at Italian championships and 75 medals at world and European championships. These are impressive figures that the regional association can show. South Tyrolean athletics has also made a name for itself as an organizer, for example through the U18 World Championships in 2009 in Brixen, the Italian general class championships in 2005 and 2012, and several international running events. The period from 2005 to 2012 was undoubtedly the most successful period in the history of South Tyrolean athletics.

On Saturday, high above Bolzano, outgoing President Armin Bonamico toasted the highlights of the past eight years together with numerous athletes, coaches, club and association officials. "The decision not to run for office again was not easy for me - said Bonamico - but it was clear to me from the start that it would be over after eight years, because at some point there will be time for a change." Bonamico attributed the successes to joint efforts and the valuable work of the coaches and trainers in the local clubs. There are currently 48 with almost 3000 members. "In my work, I was able to rely on a competent and powerful group of employees. My greatest thanks go to my board colleagues, our employees, our representative in Rome Stefano Andreatta, the national trainers, the referees and all the organizers," said Bonamico. The outgoing president, who had been a member of the South Tyrolean Athletics Association for 20 years, also thanked for the good cooperation with CONI, VSS and Südtiroler Sporthilfe. In his speech, Bonamico also discussed recent successes. The highlight of 2012 was Silvia Weissteiner's great performance at the Olympic Games in London. It was always a special satisfaction for him to watch the young athletes have great fun competing in the Youth Grand Prix, for example.

Coni President Heinz Gutweniger praised Bonamico for his commitment to breaking down parochialism and his level-headed nature. As a result, he succeeded in bringing athletics in South Tyrol to a high level. VSS chairman Günther Andergassen thanked Bonamico for his foresight in leading the “Queen of Sports”.

Bonamico's successor will be elected next Saturday at the House of Sports in Bolzano. Bruno Cappello, technical director of the U18 World Cup "South Tyrol 2009" is the only presidential candidate. There are 6 officials running for the 9 positions on the board. The annual general meeting followed by elections begins at 15 p.m.
