Athletics conference in Bolzano: Let children grow up slowly

“When I took office as state president, I promised that I would work intensively to train trainers,” explains Cappello. “It is extremely important for trainers and supervisors to continue their training and adapt to the most modern training methods. The trainers play a crucial role in educating and motivating young athletes and have a decisive influence on their development. The more qualified the trainer, the more significant the desired results can be. But we all have to learn to have more patience and guide children step by step from learning through play to competitive sports. Children love competitions, but you have to organize competitions for children”. In their lectures in Bolzano today, all the experts emphasized that you shouldn't “burn” the children and that you have to let them grow up slowly and carefully. The conference was well attended, with internationally recognized speakers, such as the former German world-class high jumper Wolfgang Paul August Killing, who, after his active competitive days, first became national coach of the German Athletics Association and then was responsible for the DLV's coach training. Or the university professors Jürgen Weineck, who has written numerous books on sports science, and Antonio La Torre, editor of many scientific articles in international journals. La Torre was also the coach of former Olympic champion Ivano Brugnetti, a 2004 gold medalist in walking. The speakers also included Sterzing coach Ruggero Grassi. In the middle and long distance races, he brought athletes such as Christian Obrist, Silvia Weissteiner, Agnes Tschurtschenthaler and Anna Stefani into the national team.

It was emphasized that sport has a social and societal function (lack of exercise, obesity, health, fitness, fun, all-day school, integration and inclusion), but that it itself can also be a place for social problems. One thinks of the overloading of young people or doping. That's why a trainer should have a lot of skills. Among other things, he must know the various disciplines, be familiar with biomechanics, movement theory and biology, organize training and competitions, be able to lead people, be an educator and psychologist and have a lot of patience. He is a role model for his athletes.

Coaches should teach general athletics to young people up to the age of 15 and only then begin specific training. Individually tailored training tasks are also important for children. Poor performers must be integrated into the group, for example through team experiences, training camps or competitions in other sports. This is the only way children will be bound to their club in the long term. In addition to training and competition, young people also need special events.

Cappello also announced during the conference that he would like to repeat it next year, with practical presentations in the sports halls.
