Athletics: US star Felix finds a new sponsor

Los Angeles (SID) US track and field star Allyson Felix (33) has found a new sponsor after her dispute with sporting goods manufacturer Nike. The six-time Olympic champion signed a contract with the US company Athleta. In May, Felix criticized her long-time supporter Nike for its treatment of pregnant athletes. "When we have children, we risk financial losses during pregnancy and afterwards. It is an example of a sports industry in which rules are still mostly made for and by men," Felix wrote in the New York Times at the time. The 33-year-old gave birth to a daughter at the end of last year. She decided to start a family even though she was negotiating a contract with Nike. Despite all her successes, Nike only offered her a contract that paid 70 percent less. Felix, the most successful athlete at the Olympic Games with six gold and three silver medals, was enthusiastic about her new sponsor. "It's incredible how supportive they are of me. They care about me as a whole - as an athlete, as a mother, as an activist. To be supported like that is great," she told People magazine. Last weekend, Felix celebrated her comeback after a 13-month break at the US Championships, but missed qualifying for the World Championships in Doha (September 28th to October 6th). After the first allegations became public, Nike announced improvements and a new policy in dealing with pregnant athletes.
