World Athletics Championships: It starts on Saturday

After the great 2009 World Championships in Berlin and thanks to the introduction of the Diamond League, a series of meetings held all over the world, athletics is booming and enjoying ever greater media presence. It will be no different at the World Cup, when all eyes will be on the athletics facilities at Daegu Stadium. The stadium, built for the 2002 World Cup, was built by an Italian company.

The 1943 athletes from 202 nations will fight for precious metal here, regardless of whether they are the world stars Bolt, Rudisha or Idowu, or athletes from relatively unknown countries such as Oman or the Cape Verde Islands.

So it will be an athletics festival that will last until September 4th. The organizing committee did everything in its power to make the event a mega event. There will definitely be no shortage of spectators in the stadium and along the routes.

The star of the World Cup is undoubtedly the Jamaican Usain Bolt, who wants to repeat his triple success in Berlin. Two years ago, the 25-year-old triumphed in the 100 meters, 200 meters and the 4x100 meter relay, setting a new world record in the two individual races. Now, a year before the start of the Olympic Games in London, Bolt, who was born in Trelawny on August 21, 1986, wants to climb to the Olympus of athletics.

The one between the Kenyan David Rudisha and the Sudanese Kaki Kamel over 800 meters should be an interesting duel. The former holds the world record, but the latter is always a serious opponent.

The race over 110 meter hurdles will also be exciting, where the Cuban Dayron Robles, the Americans Oliver and Merrit and the Chinese Liu are among the favorites?

And the “Azzurri”? With 33 athletes, the national athletics association (FIDAL) has an extremely lean contingent this year, but will do everything in its power to win at least one medal. Because the green-white-red association doesn't want to stay without a medal again - like in Berlin.

The most promising candidate for the precious metal is a South Tyrolean, namely the walker Alex Schwazer. Kalcher, reigning Olympic champion over 50 kilometers of walking, will “only” compete in the short distance in Daegu. A serious knee injury and the associated delay in training forced him to do so. Schwazer will start the race on Sunday, August 28th at 2 a.m. (CET).

In the heat and in the fight against the world's best athletes in this discipline, the 26-year-old will have to run a smart race. Then maybe it could be enough for the third medal after 2005 and 2007, when Schwazer won bronze over 50 kilometers in Helsinki and Osaka.

Daegu, the city of two million people in South Korea, is hosting the 13th World Athletics Championships. For the third time in its history, the World Cup will be held in Asia, after Tokyo 1991 and Osaka four years ago. The wait for the exciting competitions is over.
